Modern humans are an incredible new species. Although we don't realize it, it is a fact. In the almanac of life on earth, we appear very late. If the earth was formed on January 1st and we are now on December 31st, we only appeared 15 minutes before 12 o’clock in the morning on December 31st, and all that was recorded History has passed in the blink of an eye in the last 60 seconds.
Life has existed on the earth for 3.8-40 billion years. Many species have appeared in the process, but 99.9999% of the species that have existed have been extinct... The tragedy of human existence is that we are still in a budding state. We are not only accelerating our own extinction, but 50 to 55 species are extinct because of us every year. The tragedy lies not in the imminent or potential crisis of human extinction, but in the mass extinctions we have caused.

The 11th Hour quotes

  • Kenny Ausubel: When we all talk about "saving the environment" in a way it's misstated because the environment is going to survive. We are the ones who may not survive. Or we may survive in a world we don't particularly wanna live in.

  • James Hillman: But even to think that we are separated from Nature is somehow a thinking disorder. You cannot be separated from Nature. Why we think that way is the interesting thing.
