Morality and love tactics

The scenes of the film are very fragmented, and in some places there are almost slides, but these fragmented and incoherent scenes are integrated into an indissoluble whole by the narration of the protagonist Adrian throughout the play. When I was watching the movie, it felt like I was watching a set of slides, and a person next to me was telling the story contained in this set of slides.

Adrian’s narration is very important in this film. The narration in ordinary movies can generally be considered as a supplement to the lens. It is something that cannot be expressed in the supplementary image. Therefore, it must be the truth. It is very certain. But Adrian's narration in this film is not like this. Adrian is the protagonist in the play, and he can't stay out of this story. Therefore, some of his narrations are not true, and some are even selling off. This is also a mystery in this film.

The protagonists in this film (two men and one woman) live in a villa in the country.

The film begins with three prefaces. These three prefaces depict three characters respectively. They are

Hame, a girl who collects men. She lives in this villa.

Daniel, half the owner of the villa, a more cynical young man, i.e. angry youth, a friend of Adrian.

Adrian, the real protagonist in this film, a young man who thinks he is a moral person. He has no job and is preparing to organize an art gallery with a collector. He has a month to rest because of the preparation of the art gallery. The work is basically ready. For this reason, he refused to go to London with his girlfriend Rodolph and went to this villa. The other half of the owner of the villa is his girlfriend Rodolph, and Hame is Rodolph. Her husband’s friend, she met Adrian on the bed at Rodolph’s house, but Adrian was not the man lying on her. This plot has a very important meaning to the film, because it is the foundation for a series of psychology and behavior of Adrian,

Daniel:
Daniel is an angry young man who hates everything in the world. He is like a man with a stick. He wants to smoke everything in the world. Of course, he often sits on the sidelines. He hates those who fit him more than those who contradict him. Because if a person disagrees with him, he can raise his stick in excitement to vent his anger, but if the person is completely attached to him, then his anger will be nowhere to be expressed, so he can only report it with ridicule and mockery. . His character is absurd, but there are still many people who are actually very similar to him. What kind of love and affection a person with such a personality should have to be happy, this really needs to be studied. Happiness seems to be hard to find here, but for people like him, fortunately, God did not make happiness and happiness have to be at the same time. One cannot lack the other, but the other unfortunately is that there is no happiness. Your happiness can never last.

Adrian:

Adrian is humble and easygoing. Because he is very handsome, he has a self-righteous sense of superiority. A sense of superiority will either lead to humility or arrogance. Here, Adrian has moved towards humility, but this humility is still a kind of concealed arrogance. Because this sense of superiority is not so much that it makes him humble, it is better to say that it can give him the conditions for the expression of humility. Therefore, he is always a man who thinks he is very moral and has a strict sense of morality. But if this kind of morality is not recognized by others, he will be very angry. In fact, this is hypocrisy, but it is more like a man's vanity.

Daniel and Adrian are good friends. They have different personalities, but they get along well. Because they know each other, they can live together without interfering with each other. Daniel is lonely and Adrian needs a month of rest for a month of complete inaction. But because of the existence of the girl Hame, Daniel's arrogance was challenged, and Adrian's plan was disrupted.

Hame:
Hame, the character of this girl is very mysterious. The mystery is that no one knows what she wants, maybe she doesn't know it herself. She always wants to live a carefree life. Since she is sincere and hurt, she refuses to talk about love, but if she refuses to talk about love, it is impossible to have a man who really likes her. Although she does not refuse men who come, she can only establish a vulgar relationship between men and women. It's hard to say that she likes this, but she can't find the kind of relationship between men and women that can keep her free and independent. She can't find it at all. She always slept with a man casually, she was neither counter-judgmental nor aloof, neither innocent nor coquettish, she was docile, smart and understanding. She is very casual with everything. Neither ask others to circle her, nor change it for anyone. A man can easily get her body, but it is very rare that she cannot get her sincerity.

There are too many contradictions in her character, so it is difficult to be understood by the men who have established vulgar relationships with her, and she is too lazy to understand them. Maybe she is looking for the best one, which is indeed related to The situation of collectors is very similar, and there will never be the best one for collectors.

In fact, it can be said that she is living a very absurd life. As Adrian said, if she doesn’t plan to have sex with someone, then she is a lowly person and a disgusting person. If she keeps doing this, adding her own thoughts and planning certain things every day, Will change everything. That is, it will always be very attractive, because people are always most interested in what they can’t get. As long as Hame can remain unobtained by others, she will be infinitely attractive to others, and once others get her, she will Will be treated as a very cheap person and abandoned.

Story:
Every night, Hame always brings some vulgar, naive and stupid boys who do not know where they came from here for the night. This bores Daniel and Adrian.

At the beginning, Adrian vowed that he would never give Hame any chance. Daniel did not swear, but he also clearly told Adrian that everything he did to Hame and her made him very annoying. But this is their own wishful thinking, it is false, because Hame simply ignores them, so their different arrogance can only be transformed into the air from the pierced balloon by this same attitude. Spread on its own.

Because these two self-conscious men can't tolerate being turned a blind eye by a girl who doesn't demand much of men. They said that they wanted to save her soul (Adrian instilled a sense of morality in her, and Daniel recommended to her "the theory of light and the theory of collectors"). In fact, it was their own arrogance. Make them discouraged. In addition, because of their pride, they don't want to easily establish a relationship that can be easily established with Hame. They can't establish this kind of relationship with her, because in that way, they might also become one of Hame's collections, and they will fall in value with those whom they have mocked and mocked before. This is something they want to avoid.
But Hame is very cute, very cute, very, very cute. This is the most fundamental reason for the development of the whole story.
The protagonist of the story is Hame, but the promoter of the story is Adrian. This story can actually be regarded as Adrian playing two cards in order to get Hame (in fact, the whole movie can be regarded as the director of Rohmer Two games). In the first game, Adrian used Daniel as his hole card. In the second game, Adrian used his partner collector Sam as his hole card. Adrian is not talking about love in this story, he is fighting against the subtle and ridiculous relationship that exists between the three of them, and is playing with love tactics. This is also the reason why Adrian's narration mentioned above is the secret of the film.
Adrian first urged Hame to pursue Daniel, and then asked Daniel to get Hame into bed. His goal was actually very interesting. He wanted to beat Hame with Daniel’s stick, and then he could hurt Hame’s stick. Put down his moral mask in front of him. why? Because Adrian wants to use his morality to lure Hame into itself, there are ridiculous factors in it.
Adrian wants to seduce Hame with a sense of morality. He can only seduce, but he can’t pursue it, because his girlfriend Rodolph is also a friend of Hame’s. (This is in Adrian’s preface. The meaning of that arrangement). If he wants to pursue it, then he opposes his morality (about loyalty). This is the absurd thing in Adrian's moral bait. For him, he can only get Hame by tearing his moral mask, but if he wants to get Hame, he has to make Hame a moral person. What he wants to give Hame is what he wants to strip from himself. Because there is the word loyalty in his morality, he must betray his loyalty to Rodolph if he wants to get Hame, but what he wants to pass to Hame is to remain loyal in love.

This is also the reason why he has to play tricks. He can only strip Hame of his moral mask in front of Hame’s stick only if he gets Hame with a stick, because here his sympathy and comfort can make him Breaking through the bottom line of morality, the weaker Hame was at that time, the more he could do.

But neither Daniel nor Hame are idiots, not only knowing his psychology very well, but also pretending to be invisible. Daniel directly rejected him, but Hamei did not say anything about it. This left him at a loss, so he had to attack with fire, hoping to make an elixir of love in Hamei. But when he felt that he was about to succeed, things suddenly changed. Everything happened according to his original plan. On one night when he was going to the city, Hame got on Daniel's bed. Of course it would make him uncomfortable at this time, but he got everything he wanted.

Although the game did not start when it should have started, it developed in the direction it should be developed. Finally, Daniel gave Hame a stick, walked away, and went to Seychelles. But the stick injury to Hame was not serious, and Hame rejected Hadrian's suggestion to sleep together.

So the first game is over.

So the second game began.

The second game took place between Adrian, Hame and collector Sam. Sam is a patron of Adrian's gallery. On the day Daniel left, he came to this villa. He bought a piece of Song Dynasty porcelain that Adrian had found for him. Adrian got a check from him and a card at the same time. Because Sam is very interested in Hame.

Adrian’s psychology of playing Sam’s card is very complicated, and it’s a bit difficult to explain. Maybe at this time he already feels that it is difficult for Hame to be changed by him, which means that he can’t let Hame do what he wants. Find a way to build a relationship that he likes, or he gets Hame, but this kind of Hame might make him bored. Either he becomes part of Hame's collection, which he does not want to accept.

He asked Hame to let Sam’s bed, and his purpose is to push Hame into a very vulgar situation and use Sam’s money to humiliate and demean Hame. If Sam is really captured, or Sam is captured by Hame, he can lower Hame’s position in his heart so that he doesn’t take her to heart and gets the kind of restless rest. It was his original purpose of coming to the villa for vacation.

But his card was also seen through by Hame and Sam. Hame was still noncommittal to these and refused to all those who came, while Sam decided to treat his naive love tactics and treat himself as a card. This kind of treatment launched a counterattack. In short, the two of them decided to use the plan at the same time. Of course, they were different from each other.

Hame is a female collector, Sam is a male collector, Hame collects men, Sam collects antiques, and both Hame and Sam are very savvy. They not only saw through Adrian's psychology at a glance, but also saw through his weaknesses. Adrian's weakness is also the strength he thinks he has, that is, the self-esteem and self-confidence caused by his morality and superiority. Sam will be responsible for destroying his self-esteem, and Hame will be responsible for destroying his self-confidence.

Hame got into Sam’s car, and Adrian drove his car behind. They came to Sam’s house. That night, Hame stayed and Adrian left alone. He promised two Pick up Hame in the next day.

In the two days when Adrian was alone, he finally found himself a ridiculous fool. His morals kept him away from the wonderful and deserved happiness he wanted. And even if he didn't reach Hame, he didn't need to tease himself like this.

When he drove to pick up Hame, he was already overwhelmed by his jealousy. But Hame and Sam deliberately irritated him and greeted him with a gesture that made him uncomfortable. But this is not over yet.

In Sam’s living room, Sam embarrassed his self-esteem with his theory of enjoying life, so that he was forced to admit that he was a beggar without a job, even though he explained that he was like an Indian Tara Huma. Beggars like Laren are arrogant beggars, but although they are qualified to be arrogant, they are very discouraged at this time. And because Hame has been present at this time, his pride has been hit harder.

Sam repaired him, very proud. Hame walked to Sam and poured him a glass of wine, and lured Sam to chase her. This is what Sam may lack after his victory, which can give Adrian even greater contempt and show off his victory. But the result was beyond everyone's expectations. Hame smashed the valuable antique that Adrian had sold to Sam to the ground and fell into a mess, irritating Sam from the pain, thus exposing the hypocrisy of his life theory.

She did it on purpose, she helped Adrian. Adrian finally decided to surrender to her, accepting what he didn't want to accept. They decided to go home.

In this film, Rohmer always makes Adrian not get it when he wants it, come again when he doesn’t want it, and want to abandon it when it’s hard to get it, but then suddenly get it, and then go on Just lost suddenly. The whole film seems to be joking with him like this, in fact, God always loves to make such jokes with people. But the joke is not over yet, it's still the last one. Adrian has got it now, but he will still lose it.

They drove on a narrow road that was about to reach their residence, oncoming two friends that Hame had known before drove a luxury sports car. They saw Hame and motioned to talk to her, and Hame motioned to Adrian to stop, and Adrian was very unhappy. But he stopped, Hame walked over to talk to them, but they asked Hame to go to the place they went with them now, Hame refused, but she was not firm, which made Adrian very angry. There was a dark fire in his mind, just at this moment a car came behind him and honked his whistle to destroy him. So his patience finally got out of control, and he drove away alone, throwing Hame at the vulgar and hateful people.

Adrian lost Hame but got the peace he wanted, but only after he got it did he discover that this kind of peace was simply unbearable.

So in this loneliness and regret, he could only do a series of things that became a string of things, that is, call, book a plane ticket, and go to London to meet Rodolph. Accept the suggestion he didn't want to accept before.

This life was meant to make many jokes with him.

Rohmer may also use this kind of joke to give Adrian this very helpless situation to speculate or even ridicule his hypocritical morality, and maybe there is something else. However, whether this hypocritical morality is necessary, it needs to be investigated in depth.

All in all this is a very interesting movie.

  • Daniel: I'm still interested in perversity. But nothing like that kind of chick.

  • Daniel: The more girls a guy has, the more he's suspect. The important thing is not to be liked. It flatters me. It's nice not to be in her collection.
