To put it straightforwardly, this movie is my personal favorite horror movie in 2020.
The script of the movie has a good structure, and the suspense at the beginning of the story is just right. In the subsequent development of the story, a lot of "scare" sections are set up. Some of them are sudden to me. There is a good balance between the horror clips.
The script has made great efforts to portray the main characters. The behavior of the protagonist and the couple is very "cult", but their motives are their love for their grandson. This sense of contradiction is always carried through to the protagonist and the couple, but how to balance this sense of contradiction , It depends on the skill of the screenwriter. Excessive bias between "love" and "evil" will make the story unconvincing. At this point, I think the screenwriter has done a good job.
The director of this film does not seem to have much work, but this film shows his strong enough control. From the first shot of the film, you know that this is a film with "ideas", and the director is very good. He controls the rhythm of the film, neither does it frequently bomb the audience’s senses with "plasma" and "screams" from the first second of the film, as in many inferior horror films, and does not fall into an over-prepared atmosphere that leads to the rhythm of the film. Too slow, a sleepy error.
The film’s starring actors are two old actors. Although I have not seen their previous works, there is no doubt that the rich performance experience of these two actors is enough to support this work. This is a horror film, but the emotions of the actors are not There is no immutable gloom and neuroticism. Their emotional expression is reasonable most of the time. This is much better than the "Darkness and Evil" I watched before, and the audience can better integrate into the story itself.
Of course, this film is certainly not invulnerable. The emotional changes of the characters sometimes seem unnatural, limited to a budget of 250,000 US dollars, and there is indeed a lack of special effects. This shortcoming is infinitely magnified in the third act of the movie, but it seems to be in 2020. There is no more interesting traditional horror film than this movie. If you don’t like the assembly line work of "a few young people running into the wilderness", then I strongly recommend you to watch this movie.
ps. The design of the black ghost in the movie is very "George Freud", which makes me feel very suitable.
