Narrator is missing

A very simple presentation of the relationship between France and Vietnam, like God and mortals, the most important of which is their choice between the macro world and the micro world. Camille and Ariana, or Baptis, are different. The latter two can be Tired by love, she can't. The colonists have the right to look forward and backward, and the colonized have only one way to go from the very beginning. The concept of freedom is too abstract, but they are concrete enough to not kneel down. The colonial countries not only tame them, but also have to inculcate them with rebellious ideas, so that they feel sad. This hypocritical view itself reveals a sense of superiority.

The acting skills are still in place. I was once infected by the cold temperament of the heroine, but the script failed to make the character stand up. Ariana’s fascination with Baptis was too sudden, and she continued to watch but she was not convinced. It was definitely not a few lines, “I can’t be as frank as you, and I won’t express my emotions in front of everyone. The more I feel moved, the more I can’t explain it. Besides, there is a layer of Ariana telling her grandson outside of the whole story, so her indiscretion is a bit hard to understand for her grandson or the audience. At the same time, Ariana's absence in the second half of the movie brought about perspective problems. The narration was missing for a while in the middle of the movie, and when he picked it up again, it was only a bland ending below the expected line.

The process of watching the movie reminded me of the experience of watching "Forbidden Love" directed by Martin Butler in 2015. The latter wanted to make Romeo and Juliet on Tanner Island, and "Indochina" wanted to take place in Gone with the Wind in Vietnam happens to be nominated for Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. The advantages of the two landscape photography are exactly the same. The unique local visual spectacle presents a tropical dampness. However, the biggest advantage of this film is that it has nothing to do with the theme. At most, the film is not so frivolous in comparison. The same intention is to create a romantic atmosphere that is isolated from the world. The film has a stronger sense of time and place, and greater ambition. Unfortunately, it has no focus.

Indochine quotes

  • Guy: Give me Le Guen.

    L'Admiral: No.

Guy: What will you do with him?

L'Admiral: I'm awaiting orders from Paris.

Guy: Let me question him. What he knows about the communist networks and leaders is of major interest to us.

L'Admiral: Three points, Mr. Asselin. One: Le Guen doesn't talk. He hasn't spoken since his arrest. Not even to my chief of staff - his classmate. Two: If I hand him over to you, he might talk. But I'd rather not. We know your methods. Three: Le Guen is a sailor. His case will be tried by sailors. Any relevant information will be passed along to you.

Guy: Thanks. Another example of Navy-Police cooperation. That's what makes empires great.

  • Mme. Minh Tam: You have to forget this man, Lili. I'll never understand French love stories. They're all about madness, fury, suffering... they're similar to our war stories. You know the secret. I've told you already.

    Eliane: Yes, I know. Indifference.
