The story takes place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1950. 18-year-old Eurydice and 20-year-old Jeddah are inseparable biological sisters who live with conservative parents. Despite the traditional family traditions, the two sisters have their own dreams: Eurydice wants to be a professional pianist, and Jeddah is eager to pursue true love.
At the beginning of the film, sisters Jeddah and Eurydice are in the forest. The sister walks so fast that she can't see the shadow at once. The two are looking for each other and can only hear the sound. . . It is a preview of the entire storyline: the two will eventually be separated, even if they live by their side, they are not visible like a fog.
The 20-year-old sister, Jeddah, has always longed for free love. After meeting the sailor George, she was immediately attracted by his unrestrained nature. One night, under the cover of my sister, she put on a nice dress and grandma's earrings, and sneaked out of the back door to meet George. My sister didn't agree with her going out, but she didn't want her sister to lose her love, and finally promised her sister to stay home at one o'clock in the night to wait for her to return.
At one o'clock in the evening, my sister did not go home. Eurydice found the earrings dropped by her sister on the steps of the back door, which became what she thought of her sister. The next day I received a letter from my sister. For freedom and love, my sister went to Greece with George on the cruise ship where George worked. Brazil in 1950 was still a patriarchal society. It was a shame that a daughter eloped with a man without saying goodbye. When the father saw the letter, he was very angry, as if there was no such daughter.
Eurydice got married under the arrangement of the family, and her husband took her for the first time on the bathroom floor on the night of the wedding. It can also be seen that in his eyes his wife is actually a tool for venting and a housekeeper who takes care of the family. But Eurydice still practices piano every day, hoping to pass the exam one day and go to the Vienna Conservatory of Music for further studies.
Later, my sister got pregnant by accident, and at the same time found out that George was a fascinating man with many lovers outside. She returned to Brazil and wanted to live with her parents. When my mother saw her, she felt distressed and her eyes were full of tears. When the father who scraped the fish scales saw it, he humiliated Jeddah with a fishy hand. Let her leave through the back door, this is no longer her home, so don't come back again. The father lied to Jeddah that his younger sister had gone to Vienna to learn the piano. Jeddah thought that one day he saved enough money to visit her younger sister in Vienna and listen to her playing the piano.
Jeddah gave birth to her son in the hospital alone, and met Philo who was really good to her, and treated her like her own daughter and friend. Although there is no blood relationship, she feels true love. Philo got pancreatic cancer, Jeddah tried every means to control Philo's condition, relying on morphine to relieve pain. Later, Philo's condition worsened and morphine could no longer control her pain. She hoped that Jeddah could inject her with an overdose of morphine so that her soul would no longer be painful. Philo left the house to Jeddah and told her to inherit the real estate certificate in her own name. At the same time, Philo was buried under his own name.
Eurydice’s musical journey was not smooth. Before the exam, her mother was seriously ill and she became pregnant. Her husband was very grudged about her wanting to go to Vienna, but hoped that she could stay at home, have children, and take care of the daily life of the family. I missed the exam for various reasons. Eurydice once asked her mother if she had news about her sister. The mother evaded this question because the husband said not to talk to Eurydice about Jeddah. The mother was the shadow of her father and had no thoughts of her own.
Later, Eurydice took the school exam and was admitted once. At this time, Eurydice gave a long-lost smile. She wished to be with the piano all the time, only at this time she was relaxed. When she got home, her husband knew the news and had a big fight with her. At this time, she received a call from a detective. Eurydice has been entrusting detectives to help find her sister's whereabouts for many years. They came to the tombstone, which is actually where Philo rested. Eurydice thought that her sister had really passed away and had bipolar disorder, so she burned the piano.
More than 60 years later, Eurydice’s husband passed away, and a password box was found while organizing the relics. The son-in-law opened the lockbox and took out the entire stack of letters. These letters were sent to her by Jeddah since returning to China. Eurydice knew that her sister had been thinking about each other the same way as herself, and that her sister actually lived near her. Following the address on the letter, Eurydice found her sister's granddaughter, who looked exactly like her sister. When my sister knew that she died, she thought her sister was a pianist, and hoped that her granddaughter would also be greedy for the piano.
This movie is the only one in a long time that makes my eyes feel hot. The struggle of the protagonist in the film, the resistance to society and family. For more than 60 years, the loving sisters lived nearby but couldn't meet each other, but they always kept each other in their hearts.
Perhaps women who have lived in a patriarchal society since childhood may have already acquiesced to this social system, but today we will be heartbroken to see it, too much helplessness and compromise. In the end, it was the son-in-law who opened the password box, and even his daughter did not know the password.
The last thing I didn't understand was that the letter was sent by Jeddah to his mother, hoping to be passed on to his sister. Although the letter may have been detained by the stubborn father, why it was not explained in the hands of Eurydice's husband in the end. She also didn't explain the psychological activities of Eurydice's husband when she received the letter, so she felt a bit regretful.
