How to realize an unattainable dream?

Because of their promise to a dog, the couple, John and Molly, built a farm that is in complete harmony with nature.

The documentary "The Biggest Little Farm" tells the story of what happened on this farm. The director of the film is John himself .

In 2010, John and Molly lived in a small apartment in Santa Monica.

John turned out to be a wildlife photographer and Molly was a food blogger.

Their commitment to each other is to create a meaningful life together. Molly has a dream farm: a garden, an orchard, and animals—just like the fairy tale book says.

This kind of life sounds extraordinary, but this small apartment is far from their dreams.

All changes are due to the appearance of a dog.

This little guy is called Todd, the dog they adopted.

But once the couple were not at home, Todd would scream. They tried various training courses for dog hunting experts and various auxiliary products, but they did not solve this problem.

Soon the landlord issued an eviction order, limiting them to move within 30 days.

But moving into another apartment can't stop Todd from screaming and disturbing the people, and John and Molly are unwilling to break their promise to take care of Todd in this life.

Right now only Molly's "Dream Farm" can solve this problem, but they have no money.

But fortunately, they finally found investors, and then acquired a piece of wasteland of more than 1,200 acres in a place about an hour's drive north of Los Angeles.

Everyone said that this was an "impossible task" to turn this barren wasteland into Molly's "Dream Farm".

They need to build an ecosystem.

Cut down more than 300 acres of trees planted before, repaired an old pond, built a high-temperature composting facility, planted new trees, planted new mulch, built a garden, built a chicken coop...

More and more items are crossed out on the list, but the list is getting longer and longer.

The farm is beginning to take shape, but their goals are more ambitious.

Like in fairy tales, they have more and more animals.

There is also a large orchard with as many as 75 kinds of fruit trees.

In the second year, the farm finally came to an end. Their first pot of gold came from selling eggs.

There are already more than 200 species of animals and plants on the farm, and in the end, they will form their own reincarnation, cyclically and endlessly.

In the third year, a new visitor, the bee, came to the farm.

They come to build nests in groups and are interdependent with fruit trees.

But as the farm began to become a real paradise, it was also producing new enemies.

Wild wolves will kill animals, birds will eat fruit, and snails will destroy plant growth.

The continuous drought in California has also destroyed the ecology of the pond.

Ducks' feces have caused overnutrition, algae multiply, and fish can't survive.

John rescued the duck from the pond and threw it into the orchard. Then the snail problem was solved and new fertilizer was provided to the fruit trees.

More cattle and sheep bring more manure, and flies lay eggs in them to produce a large number of maggots, which become food for chickens.

Whenever a new problem comes, it is often necessary to rely on the small enlightenment born from the failure to promote the ecological balance of the farm.

Every kind of life has its own benefits, and of course there will be problems due to the surge in numbers.

By the seventh year, they finally stopped fighting alone.

More and more new species are coming to the farm. Those species that cannot be balanced because of their excessive numbers are slowly waiting for their natural enemies.

Gophers that gnaw at the roots of fruit trees waited for owls, and aphids that ate up crops waited for ladybugs.

Nature has given the farm a generous gift. Those who believe in this paradise, and everyone who works hard on the farm.

Of course, there is also the original meaning of the farm-Todd.

After its death, it stayed in this land forever.

The couple also have their own baby.

The kindness people give to self-heat does not save them from the impermanence of nature.

But they have survived natural disasters, such as strong winds, droughts, and wildfires, and blossomed and bear fruit on this land in the most beautiful way.

The initial dream may be crazy or out of reach.

But standing up after every setback, every little joy moves forward more firmly, which is probably the reason why this documentary has moved so many people the most sincerely.

I hope that your deep love can also find their own paradise, with deep roots sprouting, blooming and bearing fruit, every year as beautiful as a fairy tale.
