In the last scene of the film "The Defender", the lawyer Song Youshuo, who has gained great reputation across the country, uses his body to block between the police and the masses, chanting slogans for human rights, and is unafraid to face the state's violent machinery and threats. In the June democracy movement that broke out in 1987, Song Woo-suk’s prototype Roh Moo-hyun was attacked by tear gas during a sit-in and was taken away by the police. After fierce resistance and the support of Busan people headed by Judge Han Jichun, Roh Moo-hyun was finally released.
In September of the same year, Roh Moo-hyun supported Li Shikyu, a worker who was killed by tear gas during a strike at the Daewoo Shipyard in Geoje City, and called on the workers and labor unions to fight for their own rights against the corrupt dictatorship at the funeral. Roh Moo-hyun was later arrested on the grounds of "supporting illegal strikes" and deprived of his right to be a lawyer for six months.
1987 was an important milestone in the democratization of Korea. This June movement directly led to the adoption of the Constitution of the Sixth Republic by the Korean National Assembly on October 27, establishing the Sixth Republic (the current Republic of Korea). On December 19th, Roh Tae-woo became the first democratically elected president of South Korea.
1987 was also a major turning point in Roh Moo-hyun's life. He completely ceased all kinds of legal business and officially entered the political arena. On the eve of the 13th General Election in South Korea in 1988, Roh Moo-hyun joined the Unification Democratic Party under the proposal and support of Kim Young-sam (14th President, term of office from 1993 to 1998), known as the “Godfather of South Korea’s Anti-corruption,” by the former president of South Korea, and was elected 13th. He became a member of the National Assembly and became famous overnight at the Fifth Republic hearing to impeach the aides of former President Chun Doo-hwan, known as a rookie in politics.
"The Defender" was released in 2013, when Roh Moo-hyun was four years old. Many well-known actors rejected this role in order to avoid controversy and extra career burden. Actor Song Kanghao also refused to play at first, and then persuaded by director Yang Yushuo to agree to perform the film as a "fictional creation in the context of the times". Not really starred in a certain real person in history.
Therefore, in "The Defender", we have seen a lot of adaptations and fictions, including the interpretation between the protagonist Song Youshuo and the pork shop aunt, which were all created by the screenwriter to enhance the effect of the dramatic conflict.
Even so, Song Kang-ho, the actor of Song Yousuk, was added to the “blacklist of literature and art circles” by the government of South Korean president Park Geun-hye, the descendant of the dictator Park Jong-hee after the performance of "The Defender," and his acting career in South Korea was hit hard. Also blacklisted by Park Geun-hye is the well-known South Korean director Park Chan-wook. Director Park Chan-wook and actor Song Kang-ho collaborated in the science fiction film "Snow Country Train" in 2013. Roh Moo-hyun, the president of South Korea with the highest public opinion and the lowest academic qualifications, is too incorruptible and can’t be checked. The president can only start with his relatives. Even the literary and art workers who supported and supported him after his death were not regarded as Huang Jiaoan is tolerated by the ruling forces of the Liberal Korea Party represented by the party. (The Liberal Korea Party was called the New World Party before 2017 and the Grand National Party before 2012. It is a conservative, anti-China, pro-Japanese, pro-Japanese right-wing party in South Korea. Lee Myung-bak and Park Geun-hye are both former party representatives)
Song Youshuo, the character in the movie, "Never give up" is his motto. Because he had to pay for his wife’s production costs, he had to sell the textbooks for the judicial examination. While working hard on the construction site, he studied and reviewed every night, but failed one after another. When the protagonist Song Youshuo finally got the lawyer's license and made a lot of money with the transfer of real estate, he returned to the pork shop where he had run away from debts to "pay off his debts." Song Youshuo didn’t understand the students who went to the streets to fight against politics. But as a “successful person”, he was consciously qualified to criticize those students who did not cherish the opportunity to go to school but wanted to “play democracy”. After all, for him, receiving an education in a higher education institution was a dream since childhood.
Successful lawyer Song Youshuo teased the reporter who supported the student movement, "What's the use! Can students really change the world? Do you understand with a pebble attack?" This is probably the voice of most people in Northeast Asia toward the social system: from the heart Questioning whether this world will really change for the better, the pessimism promoted by reality has no way to believe that eggs can break rocks. Even the journalists who support the student movement defended the students and even punched the lawyer Song Youshuo, who didn't understand anything, while still suppressing his conscience to continue to be the mouthpiece of the dictatorship within the system.
Is it ridiculous to hit a rock with a pebble? With a smile, he said, “No matter how hard the stone is, it’s dead, and no matter how fragile the egg is, it’s alive”. If you ask Jinyu again if he still believes in "strike a rock with a pebble", I believe his answer will be no. He will repeat the words that the abuser gave him when he was tortured with no expression on his face. He will be filled with fear and cannot repeat himself." I am guilty and I am wrong. I am guilty and I am wrong."
When we are far from the center of the storm of violence, each of us can talk or vowed to say whatever we believe in, whether it is the left or the right, or whether the movement is profitable. But after seeing how violent systems can crush a youthful life without mercy and kill the voices of opposition, lawyer Song Youshuo Mingming can become a hard and powerful rock through the hard-won opportunity to represent the chaebol, but he Selected "the side of the egg". I think this is what moved me most about this movie, and it was the answer that came to my mind for the first time when I was asked "what social problem does this movie reflect?"
In our society, no one wants to make a bloody egg with no place to bury, and no one wants to stand on the end of the egg. Our society, our politics, and our culture require us to become stronger and bigger, invulnerable, and pass on forever. Once any thoughts other than "rocks" are revealed, they are marked with profound "idealism" and "emotional use", almost invariably turning into tragedies.
But when we desperately want not to make weak eggs, desperately wanting to leave the gear of crushing eggs, some people firmly choose the side of the eggs.
