Frankly speaking, until PI started to tell the second story, my mood in watching movies has been declining. If I have any dissatisfaction with the whole movie, it is the popular story of "The Adventures of Me and the Tiger at Sea", which is a bit loose and harmonious. The lackluster, highly respected 3D impact, the effect is completely within expectations. After watching the full movie, I have been thinking about how to shoot the escape part from the sea if Quentin came to film this story. I am afraid there will be more flamboyant passages such as whipping the tiger and fishing with the tiger. However, since the role of Adventures at Sea is more to show the director's aesthetic pursuit in addition to the function of pleasing ordinary audiences, it can only be lamented that Ang Lee's dreams are too introverted, well-behaved, and full of Eastern style neatness and tranquility.
When PI slowly told the second cook version of the story of escape at sea, to me, it seemed to be awakened by nightmares little by little from a deep sleep. Only then did you realize that there was a foreshadowing that seemed like nothing before. Not idle pen. Wang Baijie, who eats gravy rice, Depatillo who disrespects faith, and the pious and tolerant PI mother, are seated one by one with the encounters of zebras and orangutans after boarding the ship. The cruelty of the reality story is like the fear of falling into the abyss. The cruelest cruelty is the reorganization and self-recovery of yourself by relying on your imagination. This is much better than the way some movies scatter dog blood.
Except for the simplest character corresponding restoration, after looking back, "PI" is really careful in the text. For example, before the lifeboat fell into the sea, Wang Baijie shouted: "Zebra, zebra", in fact, he is the zebra. There is also the phrase "your kid?" that asked the apes. For example, the cannibal island is "just" in the shape of a person. For example, when introducing the three kinds of Buddhas in Hinduism, when talking about the three-faced Buddha flowing on the river, everything in the world is just his dream. There really is no better explanation of how PI built the first story than this sentence. Everyone is his own god. You cannot dominate the present, but you dominate the memory of the past and the fantasy of the future.
When both stories are in front of you, it's time for choice to come.
The Japanese refused to believe in the dreams of fairy tales, but even less in the cruelty of reality. After hesitating for a while, the reporter chose the first dream story, "You followed God", PI’s answer was about The truthfulness is ambiguous and clear answer.
I chose the second story without hesitation.
An easy interpretation of the Bengal tiger in the first story is the other side of PI himself, but it may be too sloppy to explain it with animality. PI’s father gave an explanation-you have no feelings with it, and you are from him. I can only see my reflection in my eyes. Therefore, the story of drifting at sea is also about multi-religious believers and vegetarians-PI getting along with himself. PI has experienced a process of fear, symbiosis, domestication, and dependence on tigers. This process is also about the balance between animality and rationality. Finally, the tiger ran to the jungle without turning his head back - "Life is to let go, but sadly, I haven't had time to say goodbye to you." - When people step into the social jungle, why don't they never forget Turn around?
I am curious, what is Lee Ang's choice?
As far as I understand it, I think the tiger is the embodiment of fear. This fear comes from the fear of nature, the challenge of survival, and the inner loneliness that results from it. These people’s fears are probably lasting and desperate. The choice of adult PI is probably Li Ang's choice-to experience him, face him, and accept him.
In the middle of the film, I was alone with myself, but at the beginning and the end of the film, PI's life was accompanied by two things-family and religion. For people, family and religion are the best ways to escape fear. Religion provides a conjecture to explain the world. For individuals, it is always a comfort for us to face the unknown. The family makes us feel responsible, connected, and contributing to the world. It proves the value of our existence. These two things gave us the courage to face ourselves in terms of being born and entering the world.
When you understand that life and self are not for conquering, but for getting along, you will understand that although some things are unreasonable, you must believe, and some things are not strong, but you must rely on them. This is not Ang Lee's choice in the movie, it is probably also the choice in life for the No. 1 Li Ang in the world.
