A lonely hero who can never fail

In my opinion, the title "Bridge of Spy", in addition to the bridge where the prisoners were exchanged, is more a metaphor for Donovan's lawyer played by Tom Hanks. He did his best to risk death to save the life of an enemy spy, the life of an unknown CIA pilot, and the life of an international student abandoned by the government of his own country. With his own power, he built a bridge to protect life and justice over the sinister international political vortex! To be honest, it has been a long time since I was touched by a single character like watching this movie.
In the first half of the film, Donovan is a brave man who fights for legal justice and the future of the motherland. He not only needs to fight against the government that wants to severely sentence the spy Abel in order to color the Soviet power, but also alone. Bear the weight of "Mediocre violence"! This word is called "Mediocre Persecution" in a video program called [Luo Ji Si Si]. I want to remove the purpose of it and describe it as a kind of irrational violence. In the eyes of ordinary people, Abel is a symbol of the Soviet Union. It was he who pushed the good life to the brink of nuclear destruction, and it was he who pushed the American dream to almost annihilation! Such a person must be killed soon afterwards! ——Don’t think that I’m demonizing the people. Many times, you, and me, who are in the code, are the perpetrators of mediocre violence. The enthusiasm of the people has spread to the government, and only Donovan wants to hold on to this free federation. His legal dignity, and protecting the life of a foreign fighter who would rather die than surrender on the intelligence battlefield—he knew that this was also saving his own spy who would be captured in the future. In the face of the threats' bullets and the frantically shining spotlight, this man never bowed his head. Although there are tens of thousands of people, I am going.
In the second half of the film, Donovan became a symbol of human fraternity. In the gray Berlin, the legendary high wall is being built, and the scene of the guards of East Germany and the Soviet Union using machine guns to shoot the fugitives over the wall is shocking. And Donovan came to this impossible place alone, mediating to rescue the captured American reconnaissance pilots and American students who were not worth saving in the eyes of the US government compared with the pilots. The government did not give him any status. He lived in a dilapidated house, endured the threat of a gangster, resisted his own dismantling, and wrestled with the Soviet Union alone. He endured, neither humble nor overbearing, nor compromised! He grasped every gleam of hope and invested a hundred times harder! Just to save two American children who have never met before!
In my eyes, Donovan’s qualities surpassed the virtues in the traditional sense. His bravery lies not only in facing enemies, but also in facing the ignorance of his own citizens, and also in fighting the will of the two super empires. A capitalized bravery that cannot be knocked down by the torrent of history. He is a true lone hero. His adherence to justice is far above the fanatical and irrational so-called patriotism. At the end of the film’s climax, Colonel Abel was taken into the back seat of the car by his own intelligence service—this was a signal that he might be executed by his own person—Donovan watched the friend he had saved his life walking towards the unknown on the bridge. Tragedy and danger... At that moment, the symphony with bright background was so sad!

Bridge of Spies quotes

  • Rudolf Abel: Standing there like that you reminded me of the man that used to come to our house when I was young. My father used to say: "watch this man'. So I did. Every time he came. And never once did he do anything remarkable.

James Donovan: And I remind you of him?

Rudolf Abel: This one time, I was at the age of your son, our house was overrun by partisan border guards. Dozens of them. My father was beaten, my mother was beaten, and this man, my father's friend, he was beaten. And I watched this man. Every time they hit him, he stood back up again. So they hit him harder. Still he got back to his feet. I think because of this they stopped the beating. They let him live. "Stoit i muzhik," I remember them saying... "stoit i muzhik." Which sort of means like uh, 'standing man'. Standing man...

  • James Donovan: [forced to leave dining room before eating his meal] Enjoy your big American breakfast.
