The political and cultural interpretation of the emergency landing flight.

I think it makes sense for this film to be released when the 2012 US election is in full swing. Especially at this time, the entire United States is asking a question: If we are a country based on Christianity, what role should Christianity play in politics.

Compared with two years ago, the US government was almost shut down because Congress did not approve Planned Parenthood (a non-profit organization that supports abortion), and before the election this year, Republican Todd Akin's brain-disabled "women can shut that thing down when they encounter real rape." "Wait and wait to oppose abortion and other violations of Christian doctrines, and you will find that this country has fallen into two very different life concepts: religion and anti-religion.

If you live in the Midwest, or a relatively small city, you will meet people who are very religious, like the co-pilot and his wife, God saved everything. For example, at the beginning of the movie, the wife of the co-pilot told the media "God appeared at the moment the flight landed" and asked Whip to pray with them in the ward. Religious consciousness is even deeply rooted in the speech of many politicians. Recently, 4,000 people in a small town voted for Darwin because their county councilors believed that everything was created by God.

More interesting is the Pentecostalism church that the plane hit the moment it landed (look at those in white coats, not Amish). The South was originally a relatively conservative area for religion, and if this Pentecostalism was placed in China, it would be a thorough cult: they believed that believers would have surreal abilities after receiving the baptism of the Holy Spirit, such as speaking foreign languages, dialects, etc. Cure etc. This foreign language is not a foreign language, but a "spiritual language" that can communicate with gods, accompanied by various sounds such as screams, and only they can understand it-it sounds like a goddess, right? In fact, the Pentecostal sects are not recognized by the Christian sects, and they themselves do not agree with the doctrine of the Christian Trinity. But they are praying for people in front of the plane.

However, compared with conservative and extreme religiousists, Whip represents the living conditions of many Americans: alcohol, sex, and drugs. God is just one of their mantras. In the recently passed law, recreational marijuana is already legal in some states (this is not a drug at all), and almost a young artist has a pot in his home. They drink very badly, and even when the football team loses, drinking can increase domestic violence by 8%.

If we look at these three types of people together, in fact, it is not any religious influence that makes Whip decide to tell the truth, but the awakening of humanity in the heart and the longing for old love. It is this emphasis on human nature that surpasses various factors such as religion, politics, and social influence.

In addition, the appearance of trade union representatives also fully reflects the protection of the American judicial system for vulnerable groups: in the face of powerful airlines and aircraft manufacturers, Whip's drug test results are likely to be used as an excuse for them to shirk responsibility. U.S. labor unions are not organizations that give out gifts and worship on holidays, but are organizations that lead strikes when employees are treated unfairly, discuss wages, and protect employees' interests on important issues. In the early days of the movie, Whip didn't give face to the union and messed up the situation frequently, so why should the union help him? As we all know, the United States belongs to the common law system, that is, the case is based on the previous case (if it really wants to enter the judicial process). If this case ultimately results in Whip's life sentence, it will adversely affect the pilots and aviation staff in other judgments. And they themselves also want to maintain Whip's most basic rights and interests.

Flight quotes

  • Hugh Lang: I'm trying to save your life!

    Whip: What life?

  • Hugh Lang: [to Whip] The FAA and the NTSB took 10 pilots, placed them in simulators, recreated the events that led to this plane falling out of the sky. Do you know how many of them were able to safely land the planes? Not one. Every pilot crashed the aircraft, killed everybody on board. You were the only one who could do it!
