Insomnia

Structure The
same structure is repeated in the film, summed up in two words-coercion. At the beginning of the film, Will’s partner was coerced by the Department of Discipline (I don’t like this translation) because of his relationship with the drug offender. Coercion is also the usual method of Detective Will. He learned the embarrassing situation of the victim’s boyfriend and close friend through his veteran experience. , And used this as a condition to ask him what he wanted to know; but in the end Will himself fell into mutual coercion with the murderer because of the shooting of his partner. Coercion became the driving force for the development of the plot.
In "Rashomon", the director confused the woodcutters and monks at the beginning of what they saw in the yamen, and used this as the starting point to start the narrative. However, as an eyewitness to the incident, the woodcutter is clear about the whole process, and the reason for lying to everyone should be the most understandable. Therefore, I think the woodcutter’s saying "I can't understand" is a little unnatural. . One important reason for the director's arrangement is to finally elicit the woodman's fourth narrative of the event. At the same time, the director also asks the audience through the woodman's mouth to convey the director's intention to express. In contrast, the American version of "Insomnia" is more focused on storytelling, without the formal intention of "Rashomon", but "Insomnia" also has room for discussion.
The
reason why human coercion is everywhere is that people have hidden secrets in their hearts that may become others' handles (Waitress: There are two kinds of people in Alaska...). Secrets can be concealed, but how do you face the secrets? Kurosawa took the monk's mouth to say, "It is human nature to lie, and most of the time we can't even be honest with ourselves." This is the way the murderer Fitch used to cheat himself. Fitch spent ten minutes torturing the girl, but he still believed that he didn't mean it, so he could calmly destroy the evidence. The screenwriter here sets up Fitch's identity very well—second-rate novelist—vanity and bookish. Therefore, he can identify himself as the spiritual mentor of the girl and start socializing with it, but actually uses his experience and financial resources to get the girl's favor. However, the girl is also deceiving herself as a "spiritual mentor", but she is actually greedy for Fitch's illusion of money and spiritual communication. This dislocation of cognition eventually leads to tragedy when Fitch kisses the girl.
Detective Will once said to Hodge: "You took ten minutes to kill her, but you think you didn't mean it." This coldness (to others and to yourself) to tear the illusion made him unable to deceive himself. So Will always hesitated, agreed to join forces to create a false impression, and hated Hodge for framing Randy. Fortunately, he is still a strong person. He believes in the principle of "favorable"-you can do things by any means, but the result must be "favorable"-fortunately, the "favorable" he insists on does not only include good for himself (but whether this is another A kind of deception?). It is always difficult to achieve whether it is beneficial to oneself without violating justice. Therefore, Will's problem is, in the final analysis, the old problem of people's difficult choices when facing justice. Looking at it this way, it seems that Will's behavior has finally embarked on the path of heroism.
Real
"Rashomon" in the real inquiry, mainly the truth itself. But in "Insomnia", the truth of the incident is no longer important-everything is clear, but human intentions put a completely different coat on the fact that the process is clear. When people lie to themselves, the truth becomes more elusive. Therefore, when the female detective asked whether Will shot his partner for the purpose of destroying the witness, even Will himself had no idea (after all, people still lack confidence in justice). The reason why I said that Will "seems" to be a hero is precisely because of this assumption. In the end, Will rejected the female detective’s proposal to destroy the evidence. It seems that it does not contain heroism, but more like it. Out of anxiety about being unable to inquire about the truth.
I am a little relieved that in this film I still vaguely feel some things that are not easy to say clearly. I have experienced this kind of things in "Car Accident" and "Elephant"-I want to call it accidental. . It is with contingency that we can envision more possibilities.

Three and a half. The role played by Robin Williams did not appear until halfway through the film, but it was he who balanced the direction of Al Pacino and the whole film. And, if Lao Pa is a few years younger, he might be able to cooperate with Norlando a few years. Such a partner is actually quite interesting.

The least "Nolan" one. ❶ Good cops can't sleep because they can't solve cases, bad cops have uneasy consciences: exhausted physically and mentally, trapped beasts fighting ❷ It's too damn bright here / It's very dark here: the moment the light comes on, you can see how dazzling the sun is Thanks to Al Pacino's performance, all the anger in the room was evaporated like a roast.
