The script of this film has deeply attracted Frank. It can be seen that the depth of the film and the social issues it tries to respond to are not just what an "annual suspense action blockbuster" can carry, and its many connotations need to be carefully considered. . Director Frank left because of a disagreement with the film producer, which made the film have to change its position halfway through. However, out of respect for the director Frank, the latter preserved the part he participated in to the greatest extent.
Regarding the film itself, we can see many familiar passages:
1. In order to remind the world, criminals with high intelligence who would rather sacrifice themselves.
2. The painful performance of the prisoner during the abnormal execution of the death penalty in "The Green Mile".
3. In "Shawshank's Redemption", the protagonist worked hard to dig out the tunnel to the outside world. It's just that this is dug into the prison from the outside.
But the theme of this film is more realistic than the three mentioned above. It directs the criticism of the entire judicial system in the United States, from judges, district attorneys to lawyers, from the beginning to the end. It seems that this judicial system can only constantly make compromises between prosecutors and criminals for the sake of high case closure rates, even if the truth is covered up. In recent years, there have been many works on the reflection of the judicial system in the United States, such as "The Truth Is Supreme" and "American Violet", but the plots of these two films are more realistic than this film (in fact, they are adaptations of real cases). So it can be said that this film explores a realistic issue with an incredible plot and a deified protagonist.
