Gray, played by Stiller, plucked up the courage to propose to his beloved girlfriend, but the romantic atmosphere was disrupted by a sudden phone call. He must first accompany his girlfriend home to attend her sister's wedding, and accept the review of his future father-in-law by the way. Before he stepped into De Niro's home, his father-in-law's strong aura radiated, and everything about him began to lose control. At the airport, his luggage with the diamond ring was accidentally lost, and his negotiation with the grinning flight attendant also ended in his failure. When he came to his girlfriend's home in the suburbs of New York, the real troubles had just begun.
At the dinner table, in order to win the goodwill of the two old people, Gray, who has always been bad at words, burst out a few humorous words from time to time, but the results were all counterproductive and the atmosphere was very strange. The father-in-law looked like a handsome gardener, but he was picky about those who pursued his daughter, and felt that no one was worthy of his beloved eldest daughter. Not only that, even the pet cat was full of hostility towards Gray. A series of both good and funny things made Gray messy, and he, who was in bad luck, created a series of embarrassing things.
The highlight of the film is the tension that bursts between the two leading actors De Niro and Stiller. De Niro has always been known for acting as a gangster with a distinctive personality, and he is unambiguous when he plays in comedies. The father-in-law he played was indifferent and indifferent to emotions, but with extraordinary control, he easily played Regal in his hands. Everything about this reckless future son-in-law made him feel uncomfortable, including his profession (nurse), his surname ("Fak"), and his speech and manners. De Niro's true identity is a CIA agent, so he even suspected Regal to be unruly, and put him on a polygraph for torture.
Stiller acted very vividly with this seemingly useless man. When this hapless guy had an outbreak, he yelled in the closed toilet, knowing that the old man had already moved his hands and feet in the toilet and saw his behavior clearly. Stiller's cheeky expression, coupled with De Niro's expression of wanting to laugh but trying to hold it back, made the audience utterly disappointed. With the image of such a small person, he makes people sympathetic, arouses people's laughter, and even allows the audience to gloat. However, the day when the little man sometimes comes to work, it is his perseverance and simplicity that finally won the love and recognition of all audiences.
