What's hidden behind the corpse of a bug

A movie adapted from Heinlein's novel "Starship Paratrooper". I haven't read the original work. I can't comment on how the film compares with the original. I can only talk about the film itself.

The background of the story is set in the future world. At that time, the entire earth was a federation, but not everyone in the federation could become a “citizen”. This title or qualification is required to contribute to the federation. In exchange for it. At the time of the war between humans and the alien zerg, many graduates who aspired to become "citizens" joined the army and joined the war between humans and insects. Among them, there are our protagonist and his friends. In the war, they became mature, and many things changed as they matured.

The storyline of the film is relatively smooth and reasonable, after all, there are novels by science fiction masters as the foundation. As a science fiction film, this is fine, after all, it is not a story to win. The battle scene is very bloody. Basically, people slaughter all kinds of big bugs and are slaughtered by all kinds of big bugs. Green bug blood and red human blood are often splashed on the screen. The grasp of the characters' psychology is also in place. A science fiction film can deal with the emotional entanglements of the characters in this way, which is commendable.

But I think that what this film wants to express is not just telling a smooth story, showing exciting scenes, conveying the inner feelings of the characters in the war, but also showing some other things on a deeper level. News programs are constantly interspersed in the film. It actually played an important role in reminding the plot, laying the groundwork, and revealing the theme. It is also it that conveys some absurd information. For example, after the war began, the program played some morale-boosting messages. The scene included a group of children vying to play with the guns in the soldiers' hands. The soldiers looked at the children and laughed happily. There were also a group of children struggling to trample on a few beetles to express their hatred of the aliens and their support for the war. I was very uncomfortable watching these contents, but in the film, it seems to be logical and natural. This makes us think about the "federation" in the film.

In fact, the "Federation" is a highly authoritarian regime, and the "citizens" are components of this high-speed machine. They exist because the "Federation" needs them. There is no leader or ruler of the "Federation" in the film, but he/she clearly controls the people's thinking through the news media and school education. The film allows us to see the powerful mobilization ability of this system in war, but it also exposes its repression and distortion of human nature. The director obviously has a negative attitude towards "Federation". He seems to have a sarcasm at the corner of his mouth, while holding up a microphone to give instructions to the actors, or operating equipment to edit the film. Because of this attitude, the stronger he took the "Federation", the more he showed his attack on this system. To put it bluntly, it is the insinuation of the Western democratic system to the Eastern autocratic system.

Starship Troopers quotes

  • Sky Marshal Dienes: We must meet this threat with our courage, our valor, indeed with our very lives to ensure that human civilization, not insect, dominates this galaxy *now and always*!

  • Carl: We thought there might be a Brain Bug on 'P'.

Carmen: You knew and still you sent them?

Carl: We couldn't afford to launch an operation if there wasn't one.

[both Carmen and Johnny look at Carl with contempt]

Carl: You disapprove? Well, too bad! We're in this war for the species, boys and girls. It's simple numbers. They have more. And every day I have to make decisions that send hundreds of people like you to their deaths.

Johnny Rico: Didn't they tell you, Colonel? That's what the Mobile Infantry is good for.
