"I never leave a way for myself"-Dreams and Success in "Gateka"

CaesarZX/text article was written on my personal blog at the end of 2007. In the science fiction film and television section of the fifth issue of "Science Fiction World" in 1998, I once introduced a science fiction film that I had no interest in at the time. I read the magazine countless times that year, but I didn't pay more attention to the movie. It was until 2001 when the best film on CCTV 6 was broadcast (translated as "Space Dream" when it was broadcast). It has a weird title: Gattaca.

Friends who are interested in this strange title can search for the origin of the four letters of GATC.

Consider God's handiwork; who can straighten what He hath made rooked? —— Ecclesiastes 7:13 Bible "Ecclesiastes" Chapter 7, Section 13, I not only think that we will tamper with Mother Nature, I think Mother wants us to. It is precisely what nature cannot ask for. —— Willard Gaylin

A not-too-distant future

Vincent is a child of God. From conception to childbirth, it is the product of "natural birth" love. He is born with a series of health risk assessment data: 60% possibility of neurological disease, 42% possibility of mania, inability to concentrate The probability is 89%, the probability of heart disease is 99%. There is a possibility of premature death. Life expectancy: 30.2 years. So the father did not agree with the mother. Text, the meaning of ancient Roman names: praiseworthy and respected.), and insisted on calling him Vincent Anton, (Anton only serves as a middle name. Vincent: Latin, meaning: conquer) and gave this name that represents family honor The second son born two years later. The second son Anton (name) is a genetically modified person. The advanced genetic medicine has allowed doctors to extract and modify the essence of the parents' genes, so that the best eggs and sperm will be combined, and the born child will be strong With his body and excellent intelligence, there is no possibility of disease. The two brothers often play a "courage game" game, and the two swim into the sea at the same time to see who is timid or weak and turns back. Vincent has never won. The gap with his own brother is widening day by day, the most obvious in height and eyesight. But Vincent, who does not succumb to the fate of a settled life, is full of longing for space. In the last courage match with his brother, he not only saved his brother, but also won. With his own confidence, he chose to fly high. Many years later, he found a company in Gattaca (Gattaca Aerospace Corporation, the most prestigious aerospace company in the world of the movie Gattaca). The job of an improved natural person: cleaner. This company only absorbs the best genetically improved people, and no matter how Vincent, who has long aspired to become a space navigator, changes himself, he will never be able to change one thing-his own blood- -Everyone has to use blood and urine to check whether it has been improved. But he still thought of a way.

"When they look at you, they dont see you anymore. They only see me." I found an agent who specializes in forging genetic identity (think of this: "Approval, mobile phone: 138xxxxxxxx") and found an excellent genetic modifier named Jerome Eugene Morrow for himself. Jerome was in a car accident abroad and was in a wheelchair for life. Willing to sell their blood and even identity.

Practice signing, wear contact lenses, and straighten teeth. Because Jerome was much taller than himself before the accident, Vincent even made a broken bone to increase his height. Since then, Vincent and Jerome have cooperated to forge everything needed in the company-Jerome is responsible for collecting and storing his identity elements: blood, urine, dead skin, hair, etc., and Vincent uses Jerome's urine to enter smoothly The company, and every day at home, remove any things that might be used as identity elements in the incinerator and destroy them at home; Gattaca carefully avoids their “clues” from being discovered, and at the same time uses Gerome’s carefully prepared items for themselves. Species. In the era of movies, people no longer use the photos on their ID cards to identify identities, but only believe in one thing that can not be faked-genes, and it is precisely because of it that Vincent advances to his dream, which is impossible to achieve. A big step. Jerome said to Vincent: "From then on, when they see you, they no longer see you, but me." Vincent and Jerome have become friends from the beginning of the business relationship. Jerome told Vincent that his disability was caused by an attempted suicide. Yes, the reason is simply that he failed to win the swimming championship and only won the silver medal. Vincent quickly became an elite navigator candidate in the company, so fast that Jerome hadn't expected it.

However, the murder of a lift-off project leader who hindered and suspected Vincent's identity has clouded Vincent's already smooth path to space. The police found Vincent's eyelashes accidentally dropped while watching the horrible body near the scene. In the company, among all the identity elements collected by the police, only this eyelash does not meet the company's genetic requirements and belongs to a cleaner named Vincent Anton Freeman. As a result, the whole plan was messed up. The police recognized that the "gene-bad" cleaner was the murderer, but they couldn't find this person. Although the death of the person in charge is beneficial to the space program, it is a threat to Vincent's development in the company as Jerome. What's even more incredible is that Vincent's brother Anton happened to be the investigator in charge of this case by the police. He immediately became suspicious of Jerome—he looked so much like his own brother. After countless cats and mice, the police finally found evidence that the current mission director was the murderer. The long-term hard work to fly to space was finally not in vain. Vincent is about to realize his dream and become a senior navigator for a year-long flight to Titan. At the same time, he also had a relationship with Irene, a beautiful and extraordinary Gattaca candidate. The two spent many beautiful times together. "I never saved anything for the swim back." "I never leave a way for myself."-Vincent Anton Freeman Anton's jealousy of his genetically ill brother has never disappeared. He is unwilling to watch Vincent succeed in realizing his dream day by day, so he tries to persuade Vincent to withdraw from the mission, otherwise Expose his identity. Vincent did not flinch, and used another courageous match to convince his brother. He let his brother understand that an immortal dream is simply the only reason to live for a person with a firm belief. When he lost to his brother again, the younger brother struggling to ask his brother: "Vincent, how did you do all this?!" Vincent replied, "I tell you how I did it: I never give myself back. Road. (literal translation: I have never planned to swim back!") Before Vincent left, Jerome showed him a blood sample and urine sample full of Jerome and a genetic sample refrigerator that was sufficient for two lifetimes. Jerome told Vincent: "I gave you my identity, and you gave me your dream." Vincent was speechless with gratitude. With the raging flames of Vincent's spacecraft taking off, Jerome, wearing a silver medal in his swimming competition, climbed into the incinerator to start the destruction process. —————The whole spoiler of the running account is over—————

On March 11 this year, the Blu-ray DVD of this film was released. Inevitably, I downloaded the 1080p version and watched it again.

This film is one of my four favorite sci-fi movies (the other three are "Blade Runner", "Twelve Monkeys" and "Son of Man"). Back then, "Science Fiction World" translated this movie into: "Gatka", but now more translations are "Gataka", "A Thousand Years Achievement" and "Variants of Different Sha". After watching this film, apart from the preconceived "Gateka", I am most inclined to the translation of "a matter of minutes", but the reason is not in the original meaning of the idiom. The tiny pieces of skin and hair in the film are all important evidences for identification. Vincent almost ruined the future because his eyelashes, so I admire the person who came up with the translation of "A Thousand-Finished Hair".

Vincent was born to be a loser, but he did not give up on himself because his genes are not as good as humans. He has his own ideals and relies on hard work and a little luck to move towards it step by step. The glasses and thinness in his childhood are his bad genes. The symbol of human beings is also a symbol of human beings, as long as human beings still have shortcomings. His courage match with his brother Anton represents the "impossible" challenge of human beings with subjective self and objective. When Vincent was a cleaner in the company, he felt that he was still so far away from his ideals, but every time he watched the rocket launch in the distance through his glasses, he built a brick of faith in his mind. Realizing his dreams at all costs is the only reason he lives. Such a huge ideal burden seems to have crushed his weak body.

Jerome, a former swimmer, was a self-deprecating person when he played. He attempted to commit suicide and broke his spine for life with disabilities. Although he has an almost perfect body, he has completely lost his yearning for the future. The burden on his shoulders is just the opposite of Vincent's: Vincent bears the pressure of a genetically defective person who is rejected and abandoned by the world, while he himself bears the psychological constraints and self-torture that "perfection" brings to him. This contrast between him and Vincent caused countless contradictions between the two in the process of getting along, but it was precisely because of such a drastic difference that the two merged more quickly.

Jerome's boring work of preparing the genetic samples to be used next time for Vincent every day seemed to gradually make him realize the meaning of life. He gave all his identity to Vincent, which marked that his self had evaporated in the world, but Vincent's persistent pursuit made him realize that life not only requires perfection, but also dreams. The two completed the final exchange, the identity of the perfect gene and the exchange of Tianda's pursuit of dreams. In addition to the huge gift of the sample of the entire freezer, Vincent carried a small mysterious gift from Jerome with him, and confidently stepped into the rocket to Titan. Before leaving, Vincent was wondering why Jerome had to prepare so many genetic samples in advance: "Then where are you going?" Jerome replied, "I'm going to travel too." Jerome completed the last task in his life and brought it. Climbing into the incinerator with the dream that Vincent gave him. At this moment, death is far more meaningful to him than the short-sight he found in that suicide attempt.

They each got their place. The role of Irene Cassini gave the film a balance point. She is a genetic modifier, but she has a heart defect, which is a XX% chance of heart disease. This has become an obstacle between her and her ascent, and it also makes her treat herself The future is full of anxiety. Her love with Vincent was based on a lie-Vincent had long convinced the company of his "excellent genes". But when the lie was forced to be exposed, the defective genetic reformer still accepted the other party, and was infected by the destined loser in front of him, so he would naturally no longer feel so inferior and uneasy about his heart defect. She will wait on Earth for Vincent's return in a year.

Anton is a genetically improved person, but in front of his brother, his change from strong to weak is completely dramatic. His genes should have made him invincible. Unfortunately, just like the lines in this film: "The soul of man is There is no gene." He lost to his brother, a genetically defective man, in everything except his congenital conditions. At the end of the film, he eagerly wanted to show his brother the improved sense of superiority, which was completely disintegrated in the last match between the brothers. The human spirit has triumphed in the contest with genes. There is a small character who appears many times in the film, Dr. Lamar, who is responsible for all genetic samples such as blood and urine at Gattaca. Neither Vincent nor Jerome had thought of the last urine test before going to the Rockets, so no urine samples were prepared at all. I think Vincent almost collapsed when he saw that the urine test was set 5 steps away from the rocket. Until finally Vincent was about to board the Rockets, the audience did not expect it. In fact, when Lamar did a urine test for Vincent who had just joined the company for the first time, he saw through Vincent's disguise (right-handed people do not need to hold their left hand to pee) , But he kept silent about it from beginning to end. This pure and positive character provides a wonderful embellishment for the film: a small person actually played the most critical role in the most critical part: he let Vincent pass the urine test, and used his insignificant little power to be lucky. Of young people opened the door to the future. It can be said that Lamar appears and functions as a "God" in the film. This "God" gives mankind a chance.

Costumes, scenery and photography are the biggest highlights of the film. The makeup and hairstyle, the temperament of the actors, the architecture, and even the cars all use a weird, mixed style from the 1940s to the 1970s. The audience can only go from the high-tech genetic test bridge, the rocket lifts off, and The unique crisp sound of the car's hydrogen fuel engine judged that this was a science fiction movie.

Everyone in the film wears serious and old-fashioned clothes. In Gattaca, everyone in suits and leather shoes is expressionless. No one seems to be willing to reveal any feelings in their hearts; police investigators wear the same clothes as "Casablanca". · Bogart’s Hollywood spy style (as can be seen from a screenshot in the introduction section of my plot).

The uniqueness of this film in visual art is one of the parts I admire most. The main color is basically a melancholic but hopeful ocher, as if the whole movie took place in the warm evening. Although the style is so retro, everything is so simple. The lines of the characters and the background are refreshing and dynamic, and the interior of the furniture exudes a modern atmosphere, which is really a fusion of ancient and modern. In spite of the warm color, the external environment of Gattaca gave the set designer a solemn but slightly empty and monotonous chill.

The film has an excellent original script, written and directed by the newcomer Andrew Niccol. His later screenplay The Truman Show "The World of Truman" was even more acclaimed. In general, this is a sci-fi movie about a person with congenital shortcomings who struggles with his fate in order to realize his ideals. Such profound and inspirational sci-fi scripts are now rare. When the elder brother revealed to his younger brother how he realized the "impossible", the elder brother replied: "I never saved anything for the swim back." The original meaning of this sentence is "I have never reserved physical strength for the swim back." Use localization. The translation method, I decided to translate it as "I never leave a way for myself." Everyone has their own way to realize their ideals. Of course such extreme methods are not very encouraging, but as this film The expression of positive themes in the script is not excessive in this way. As for the performance, Ethan Hawke and Jude Law were still unknown juniors when the film was released in 1997. Uma Thurman was more famous than them for Pulp Fiction's "Pulp Fiction", but I must admit that their performances simply revealed. With the potential, Ethan played a character that was like two people before and after. It was a pity that the small eyes and handsome face on his face seemed to lack a sense of seriousness. And Jude’s admiration for a depressed character really made me admire. His genius performance in the later The Talented Mr. Ripley and AI Artificial Intellegence was enough to make him enter the first-line acting school. Ranks.

The soundtrack made by Michael Nyman for this film runs through a low-key and melancholic gentle melody. The rhythm of human spirit competing with genes brings a certain sense of anxiety due to the main melody of the film, but it is so methodical. I’m reposting here the clip from Michael Nyman’s Wikipedia’s The Other Side of the soundtrack for this film: Click to download in ogg format. In the rocket flying to Titan, Vincent opened the mysterious little gift, which was a small bundle of Jerome's hair. Vincent smiled because he felt that Jerome had merged with him and lived proudly together.

Vincent's monologue on the rocket: "...Of course, they say every atom in our bodies was once part of a star. Maybe I'm not leaving. Maybe I'm going home." "...Of course, people say Every atom in our body was once a part of the stars. Maybe I am not leaving, but going home."

——Vincent Anton Freeman (This is my favorite line. My own translation seems a bit wrong. I look forward to a better translation and provide more valuable suggestions. Translation candidate 1: "It is said that every atom in our body comes from A star. Maybe, I’m not leaving. Maybe, I’m going home.")

Vincent: [voiceover] For someone who was never meant for this world, I must confess I'm suddenly having a hard time leaving it. Of course, they say every atom in our bodies was once part of a star. Maybe I'm not leaving... maybe I'm going home.

  • Vincent: Is the only way you can succeed is to see me fail?
