A good story needs an environment, such as a foreign country, isolation, disappointment, heartbreak, life embarrassment... all are windows that can open a world. That's what this film is.
It started with Winslet dreaming that her daughter was lost in the crowd, shouting her name, crying, and she woke up. Perhaps, the person who is truly lost in this foreign land is herself.
There are many metaphors in the film. The two lovely daughters are actually the epitome of her own inner deconstruction.
Nowhere is this more obvious than when she was on a pilgrimage when a wise man reminded her of "love", and she woke up in tears and found that love was far away. At the same time, her daughter Bi, who also symbolizes her "love", is lost and betrays her, accepting a Christian as her mother.
The difference between the two daughters is just like the two ends of her personality.
One is fighting and stubborn, because he is unwilling to wander with her, and would rather choose to be alone; if he wants to study, he has his own definite desire, and he is even willing to bear his own hard life. ——Is it very similar to leaving home and coming to North Africa?
And the other, bewildering, obedient, simply happy, gentle. — just as she can't get rid of the often silent remittances from far-flung hometowns, and will cry for neglect. This is the weakness of a woman.
There is one paragraph that moved me.
The daughter asked her: "Will you write to him?" She replied: "When he writes to us, we know his address, and I will write to him." At this point, the daughter asked again: "Then he Know our address? If not, how can he write to us?" She burst into tears.
