Ascension - 69 minutes of Archie

What can you do in 69 minutes? read a book? Play a game? Change a partner or say a 180-degree life? For Finnish director Aki, 69-90 minutes is the time when his cravings have not developed. After 90 minutes, I don’t think the addiction should be described. And he, the movie as a foreplay to smoking. The man with a bit of Fassbender in appearance and stature has become Finland's most influential director with his Forever 60-minute film, and a regular at the Oscars for foreign-language films.

After "Ascension" aired, I was very impulsive to get to know him. It turns out that the length of his other works is less than 90 minutes. I have different preferences for movies. I like those films with beautiful pictures and a poetic feeling, just like the films of Anzhe or Tarkovsky. No matter how long the time is or how slow the rhythm is, I can enjoy it very much, because I know their footage can really talk to me. I also like films that are fast-paced and have a clear plot. The most unbearable movies are those movies that are deliberately stretched for a long time and cause me to fall asleep. Of course, personal analysis of personal issues. As for Aki's films, I think I like them the most during this time period. Similarly, they will also test the director's overall skills very much. In order to express a story clearly and have a chance of success, first of all, I believe that the character structure of the characters must be clear, and secondly, in addition to the breakthrough of the shooting method, there must also be a time-fixed point (meaning that It is said that the audience can call the feeling of about 60 minutes as full as 2 hours, which can also prove the attractiveness of the film).

Looking back at "Ascension", the director put our attention on a man whose work and life were unsatisfactory. He did not let the actor show all his misfortunes with his expressions, a little unruly, a little brave , a little luck, and a little hope slowly tell us over time the process of this man's departure from Finland. There are a lot of very attractive ideas in it, and I really don't know what a "liftoff" is until the end. Finland has always given me a very independent and comfortable feeling. At least many people around me want to immigrate there. It's just that every day from any angle of the earth, there are people who want to go, and people who want to enter. "The difference between humans and animals is that humans can make choices" --- Quoting a line from "East of Eden". To be honest, "Ascension" is very dark and humorous, and now I'm really looking forward to Aki's other films, especially "The Man Without a Past", which is competing for the best foreign language film at the Oscars.

Recently I found a lot of short stories, and my mood is a bit surging. Long and short, smoking addiction and milk tea addiction, the reason should be similar.

  • Irmeli Katariina Pihlaja: [Taisto and Irmeli have just been on their first date] It's dark. Want to come up?

Taisto Olavi Kasurinen: If its not too much trouble.

Irmeli Katariina Pihlaja: Coffee's all I've got.

    Taisto Olavi Kasurinen: Coffee's fine.

    Irmeli Katariina Pihlaja: I'm divorced.

Taisto Olavi Kasurinen: Don't let it get you down.

Irmeli Katariina Pihlaja: I've got a kid too.

Taisto Olavi Kasurinen: Gives us a head start raising a family.

Irmeli Katariina Pihlaja: Are you always so confident?

Taisto Olavi Kasurinen: No, this is my first time.

Irmeli Katariina Pihlaja: Just don't make any noise.

Taisto Olavi Kasurinen: No one will even suspect.

Irmeli Katariina Pihlaja: Really? I hope I won't regret this.

  • Taisto Olavi Kasurinen: [Taisto is discussing with his cell-mate] Listen, Mikkonen!

    Mikkonen: I don't think I have a choice.

Taisto Olavi Kasurinen: I'm thinking of getting out of here soon.

    Mikkonen: I see. How?

Taisto Olavi Kasurinen: Don't know yet. Somehow.

Mikkonen: Getting out is no big deal. Lots of guys have done it. But they were brought back and ended up doing twice as much time as before. They stayed around here, or went to Sweden, or headed to the nearest bar and got loaded. You've got to get further away, Italy or Africa, at least for awhile.

Taisto Olavi Kasurinen: I've been thinking about Mexico or Brazil.

Mikkonen: Even better. But that costs money. You think I haven't planned it all a hundred times? First, you need three grand for a passport, then ten more for the seamen to hide you in the cargo and to let you off somewhere around the equator. But it's dangerous. If the cargo starts to shift in a storm - Lots of guys have died that way. You gotta go underground until you get a passport and find the right ship.

Taisto Olavi Kasurinen: How many years do you have left?

Mikkonen: Eight, for manslaughter. But I'm innocent.

    Taisto Olavi Kasurinen: Are you?

Mikkonen: At least in God's eyes. In a way, I did kill him, but the truth is I didn't. The result was the same: He died and I was sent here. All right, let's go, then. 37 now. Eight more would make me about 43, more or less. But I won't last three hours outside without killing somebody.
