The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night.

The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul.

The LORD shall preserve your going out and your coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.

By day, the sun will not hurt you;

The moon will not harm you at night.

The LORD will protect you from all evil;

He wants to protect your life.

You go in and out, the LORD will protect you,

now and forever.

—Bible Psalm 121:6-8

The wonderful poems can soothe people's thirsty hearts, and let the lost lamb walking in the darkness see the light and find hope.

Today, the author would like to borrow this verse and combine it with the content of the video ("Miracle on Snow Mountain") to share with you the "power of belief".

American movie "6 Below" (Snow Mountain Miracle)

Type of work: biography

Main cast: Josh Hartnett (Eric), Mira Sorvino (Mother Susan), Sarah Dumont (Salvator Sarah)

Story overview: It tells the story of former ice hockey player Eric LeMarque who was rescued after being trapped in heavy snow for 8 days due to poor weather while skiing in the Sierra Nevada.

Release Date: October 13, 2017 in the United States

This is a film adapted from a real person, so compared with other types of films, this work will have many shortcomings in terms of artistic rendering, mainly focusing on realism, highlighting "authenticity" and "survival instinct".

Before officially entering the film review, let me take the fans to understand the main characters in the film and the narrative techniques of the works.

figure

Eric, a former ice hockey player, lost his career to drugs. In order to adjust his mental state (the double shadow of the body and mind caused by the crash after drug use), go skiing in the Sierra Nevada and release yourself.

Susan: Eric's mother, who does not want to see her son let her go and let herself fall, often prays silently for her.

The former is the main body of the whole story, and the latter is the psychological sustenance of the male protagonist.

narrative

The two methods are intertwined, and the narration and the interlude are combined.

Main line (sequential narrative): The male protagonist is trapped in the snow-capped mountains and uses his survival skills in the wild

Branch line (interlude narrative): multiple flashbacks (memory) after the male protagonist got into trouble

①Eric as a child practiced ice hockey together with his father

② Witnessing the arguments between parents over whether they should continue to play ice hockey

③ In the ice hockey practice game, you have a big fight with the opponent's player

④ While playing pool with his former teammates, he tried drugs

⑤ Eric, who left the ice rink and could not find his purpose in life, vented his depression in the basement

Trying to piece together these fragments of memories, the audience can understand the trajectory of Eric's life, his successes, his failures, his downfalls...

The power of belief

I, the belief of "survive"

Due to the weather, Eric, who ran out of ammunition and food, was trapped alone in the snowy Sierra Nevada for 8 days. In such a harsh environment, what was the strength to keep him alive?

It's survival instinct! It is the belief of "must live"!

He gnawed tree bark, eaten his own frostbitten and necrotic flesh, and fed his hunger with animal remains. These are all unimaginable and difficult for ordinary people to do, but in order to "survive", Eric tried all of these, which is "survival" instinctive beliefs.

II, "Prove Yourself" Belief

There is a scene at the end of the film, I don't know if the audience paid attention. It was Eric who lay helplessly on the snow and said something like "...In the end, I was a coward myself!"

The appearance of this sentence somewhat deliberately points out another reason why Eric can persist to the end (never give up), that is, to "prove himself" and "prove that he is not a coward"!

Recalling the previous storyline, we can clearly see (whether through the recollection or the last sentence) that Eric is a big boy who "destroys himself" and "has no responsibility" in his mother's eyes! It's a pity that he didn't realize this at all. It was not until this time that he was trapped in the snow-capped mountains that he suddenly woke up, had the courage to face his weaknesses, was determined to change, and proved himself.

III, "Faith in God"

3 minutes 50 seconds

The good that I want, I do not do; the evil that I do not want, I do.

—The Bible, Romans 7:19

52 minutes and 40 seconds

The sun will not hurt you by day; the moon will not hurt you by night. The LORD will protect you from all evil; he will protect your life. You go in and out, and the LORD will protect you, now and forever.

—Bible Psalm 121:6-8

91 minutes

Susan's tearful prayer.

93 minutes

Eric mentioned the meaning of "rebirth".

What can we infer from these 4 different time periods? What information can be read?

①Believe in God

Susan's repeated prayers, and Eric's mention of "God's grace" at the last moment, all showed the mother and son's trust and firm belief in God.

②The transformation of a person

What was Eric like in the beginning? The evil that I do not want, I will do!

What was the final Eric like? I have been born again, giving me a living hope!

The third reason Eric was able to survive in a desperate situation was "trusting in God", as mentioned in Psalm 41:2 "The Lord will preserve him and keep him alive".

A dusty past, an unforgettable experience. A race of faith, a new beginning.

This is the revelation of Eric LeMarque's real experience, and it is worth thinking about by everyone.

Director ★★★☆☆ (very general adaptation, failed to effectively use the content of the film to serve the theme idea, just relying on a real person at the end of the film to give an inspirational speech, obviously lacks sufficient convincing)

Actor ★★★★☆ (Josh Hartnett is absolutely hardworking, he is completely naked in ice and snow, dedicated enough to add one star; Mira Sorvino's performance is not long, but it is moving)

Plot ☆☆☆☆ (weak, lack of drama, more casual use of interlude, which leads to blunt and uninteresting progress of the story)

Visual effects ★★☆☆☆ (the male protagonist's shape, frozen hair, injured right leg, more realistic, but the background picture is very fake)

Sound effects ☆☆☆☆ (ED is very good, not to mention BGM)

Recommendation ★★★☆☆ (very general biopic, if you have free time, you can watch it)

6 Below: Miracle on the Mountain quotes

  • Eric LeMarque: Hi Mom. It's me. I don't really know what it is I wanna say. But I don't think I have much time so. I just want you to know I'm OK with how this ends. And that I'm sorry. I'm sorry for everything. Turns out I'm a bit of a coward myself. It's funny that we only get to live life forward. It never makes any sense until we're looking back. I love you, Mom.

  • Boston Bruins Coach: It's not I, it's we. It's the crest on the front, not the name on the back. You're gonna have to figure that out.
