Having studied Mildred for hundreds of times in the papers. Literally Mildred should not be depicted as hideous as what Bette Davis had illustrated. Bette Davis is adept at turning all the novel characters into her own image, which is rather incredible but sensible to some extent . Honestly, Mildred exhibited the other facet of females, which may be filled with the new feminism during the post Victorian age and the independence in females' spirits. Mildred, unlike the other female characters in the post Victorian age, she is a renegade with a rebel heart, which might stand for the awakening of feminism at the early stage. Literally, Mildred is a bad woman and the symbol of rotten people who doesn't really possess gratitude, and who are ruthless but numb.Maugham devoted all his most wonderful and most flawless carol to the other females in the novel Of Human Bondage, while Mildred was depicted as the most hideous and the ugliest one. Personally speaking, it is a little bit unfair to judge a woman by her deeds or misdeeds only.
