some thoughts

I have to say that a masterpiece is a masterpiece, and the structure of the story serves the thoughts the author wants to express. Jean Valjean is the second man I admire after "The Seibei of Dusk". His character is multi-faceted and three-dimensional. He is not a purely heroic character, but such a complex character appears more credible and the message conveyed will be more powerful. I haven't read the original book, and the following thoughts are based on my viewing experience.

What is a wicked person?

What I actually didn't understand was why Javert was chasing Jean Valjean until he met Jean Valjean for the first time after he was released from prison, and the two debated the villain. Javert believed that a wicked man is a wicked man, that he is unforgivable no matter what the reason is, and that the wicked will continue to do evil and will not repent. Javert had seen Jean Valjean, in order to vent his anger, designed to smash the prisoner, but saved him. Although Javert couldn't understand why Jean Valjean wanted to save the person he wanted to kill, the message to Javert was that Jean Valjean was a man to the core and should spend his life in prison.

Javert represents the law and the police system that enforces the law, the law is one and the same, and a crime is a crime, no matter what your reasons are. But the problem with this is that harsh laws can only lead to more tragedies, and punishment for punishment's sake cannot make the world a paradise. This reminds me of the American judge who was very popular on the Internet before, because of his humane judgment, many people lost their way. So, what is the role of the law, deterrence or exhortation?

Jean Valjean's point is that man can be both good and evil, depending on his circumstances and experience, and he is a good illustration of that. Just because he stole a piece of bread, he was sentenced to nineteen years. The inhuman treatment and torture made him no longer believe in the so-called kindness and love. It was not until after his release that he met the priest, who condoned his crimes and redeemed him from hell with a candlestick.

Everyone makes mistakes, and the difference is big or small. Those who make big mistakes can easily set foot on a road of no return because of legal punishment and social public opinion, causing even bigger mistakes. I remember seeing a serial killer before. He said he was not a bad person, but since he killed the first person, he couldn't look back. It is beyond the scope of this article to deal with the punishment for those who make big mistakes.

I still believe that there are very few real demons, and most of them are ordinary people who have embarked on a road of no return. Life is so precious, can we give them a chance to repent? This is the answer only law and morality can give, and law and morality change over time.

Is being naive a mistake?

I read a lot of short reviews, all of them blaming Fantine and Cosette's mother and daughter, to the effect that if a beautiful woman has no brains, it is a tragedy, and some viewers think Cosette hates it. But if we are not so preconceived, their behavior is understandable. Fantine is a naive girl, and it cannot be said that she is ignorant of the world. After all, the female factory workers have seen some human sufferings.

She is just a girl in the puberty period, and she firmly believes that the love she encounters must be different from others. I think most people who have been in love in the puberty period can feel the same way. If Fantine grew up in a wealthy family and received a good education since childhood, many palace marquis would like her because of her beauty. But she was not so lucky, a person's bad background should not be the reason to accuse her. Although she suffered a lot, she was still naive, naively believing that the innkeeper who knew less than three minutes would even dare to give her child to her. She paid the price for her innocence and sold her body in order to raise her own daughter, but she is still a good person in essence, she doesn't really hurt anyone, the world is too dark. Not knowing how to protect herself is her problem, but that's not why she deserves those treatments. One of the reasons why the world is getting worse and worse is that it defaults to social rules, and even skillfully uses social rules for their own benefit, and excludes those who are ignorant. Everyone is an accomplice and a victim at the same time, and the evil deeds we do will eventually revert to ourselves and future generations.

Although Cosette suffered a lot when she was a child, she was well protected by Jean Valjean after that. She also entered the puberty period and faced the same problems as her mother, but she was more fortunate to meet someone who really loved her instead of her. The person who treats her as a plaything, and at the same time has a competent parent role to escort her. Jean Valjean was afraid of losing her, so he imprisoned her freedom. If the audience hated her because of Cosette's resistance, how would you react when you and your parents disagreed? To surrender or to resist?

As for the audience of Jean Valjean's game development department, I don't know if you have read too many Japanese light novels. Jean Valjean's feelings for Cosette are family, and he is a lonely person naturally. Desire for family warmth. He had the nature of atonement for Cosette's behavior, not to mention that he had raised Cosette for so many years, and naturally he would have feelings. His idea was that the world outside was too chaotic, and he hoped that Cosette could live a good life under his protection. Of course, he was also selfish, and he longed for love and warmth, which was no problem.

In the case of protecting yourself from harm, spread more kindness, maybe your inadvertent kindness can save a person's life, so that the world may become a beautiful place. I hope that people will not be overwhelmed by poverty, that they can have enough to eat, and that they will not fall into depravity.
