"When I hug Helene, I hug all women". In my opinion, this is the most romantic confession. Because it means that the wife fulfills all the fantasies of the husband for all women. In other words, I own you as I own all women.
The afternoon is lazy, and the love in the afternoon is slow and hazy. It is not as wild, irrational, and reckless as midnight love; nor so awake as morning love. Instead, it appears to be a flavoring, just passing the time.
At the end of the play, husband and wife compromise and even forgive each other. But one of the details that moved me the most was that when the hero was about to cross the moral bottom line, his undressing reminded him of when he was teasing his children: he turned out to be the father of two children! I don't know if it's fatherly love, responsibility or loyalty... Save him from the brink. In any case, it is really invaluable.
As the title of the film, Love in the Afternoon, approaching dusk, is fleeting.
