This movie has nothing to do with medical scurvy. It's hard for you to tell what its theme is? Because it contains too many elements, there are gangsters, there is young love, there is adventure, there is cynicism, there is poetic irony, there is inexplicable weather and abstract Americans. What excites me is that I can't predict the direction of the film. Movies are so stylized these days that usually I can deduce the whole story and even the ending from the first half hour of the movie. But this movie makes me very nervous looking forward to the next minute? Because the characters are so elusive, they are logical but ridiculous. Many irrelevant elements are imposed on the plot, making the audience's emotions constantly disturbed and intensified.
I'm sure a lot of people would say this is an inexplicable movie. If it were 1986, I would definitely say the same! But now this 20-year-old film excites me. This film should be the psychological reflection of the French in that turbulent era, making a Chinese living in France in modern times be moved.
