In this film, Roberto Rossellini tells six stories.
The first story: A team of American soldiers landed in Italy. After a lot of twists and turns, they got the help of an Italian girl. After a baptism of blood, the Italians and Americans finally achieved a certain relationship. degree of mutual respect and understanding.
The second story: An Italian orphan stole the leather shoes of an American military policeman, and was later arrested by the American military police. to this poor child. A story of comedy and tragedy, realism and idealism.
The third story: tells the tragic love story between an American soldier and a native Italian woman. It symbolized the end of the "honeymoon period" between the American Expeditionary Force and the Italian native population at that time. When the Americans first came to Italy, they were the heroes of Italian women, and the American soldiers saw every Italian woman as an angel. But it didn't seem to take long before they became "unhappy" with each other, and the American soldiers were regarded by Italian women as "lewd soldiers". What about American soldiers? They see all Italian women as prostitutes. Who is responsible for such a situation?
Rossellini is simply presenting an objective narrative, then asking questions, and the answers for the audience to think for themselves.
The fourth story: It tells the story of a man and a woman who are looking for their respective lovers in the hail of bullets. The simple story structure, under the direction of Rossellini, is full of strong dramatic tension.
Fifth story: It's about religion. It tells the story of a group of religious people with different religious views living under the same roof, (between several American military priests [Jewish, Protestant] and a group of native Italian (Catholic) priests).
What Rossellini wants to say here is that even in a world where war has ravaged the world, we must always maintain our devotion to God.
Sixth Story: It tells the fighting story of a group of anti-fascist fighters of different nationalities (Americans, British, Spanish, Chinese, Italian guerrillas). A paragraph that makes people feel relatively bland and boring, and will not be described in detail here.

  • Joe - the American MP (episode II: Napoli): Just three days ago, a little hoodlum like you, stole my shoes, right off my feet. If I could get my hands on him and I will and when I do - I'll boot him in his pants so hard he'll see stars!

  • Joe - the American MP (episode II: Napoli): Why do you steal, huh? Why do you steal, huh? Let's have a look. I wouldn't be surprised to find a battleship in your pocket.
