A different love letter from Mamoru Oshii to his daughter

Combined with the age and experience of Mamoru Oshii when he created this work, we can understand his creative intention. At the time of writing this work, his daughter had just started kindergarten.

I think this film is about all the parents who love their children want to say to their children, but can't.

After Oshii Mamoru's vigorous democracy movement in the 1960s and 1970s ended dismal, the spiritual world began to show a side of despair and loss. This is also the metaphor referred to by the empty egg in the film. The child cherished the egg so much that he even began to look forward to the life inside it flying, but it was empty. And people's pursuit of the shadow of the fish is also a blind and fruitless action. All this shows Oshii's reflection on the movement, his criticism of his contemporaries, and the pain of his ideals being let down and wasted.

When people see life for what it is, they don't necessarily have hope. But despair is the same as hope. Empty eggs are not a symbol of vanity.

When the warrior involuntarily followed the child who embraced her dream, she was also redeemed by her own innocence. Even if there is nothing in the egg, even if Noah's Ark has capsized, a new hope is born in the child's breath. There is an egg on the tree that has a bird. The presence of feathers signifies the fact that birds once flew in the sky, that ideals were once realized somewhere.

I personally understand Oshii Mamoru's thoughts. I feel disgusted and powerless for all kinds of things in this world, but when I see the pink faces of newborn children and hear their tender voices, I hope they can have a more colorful future than our generation.

Mamoru Oshii's works never shy away from pointing out the cruelty of reality and the vagueness of ideals. But he was always saying that having hope was a victory in itself.

I think Faye Wong's "Human World" can explain this contradictory emotion very well. Worry a lot and hope for more.

After the storm, there is not necessarily a beautiful sky.

If the sky is not sunny, there will be a rainbow.

So just because you're innocent doesn't mean you're ignorant.

Not all relationships have a beginning and an end, and loneliness does not necessarily end with fear.

But life is always unavoidable from the initial pain.

I hope your eyes can only see a smile.

I hope that every tear you shed is touching.

I hope that every dream you have in the future will not be in vain.

Heaven and earth, if it is really worthy of praise, it is because of you that it becomes noisy.

The sky is big and the world is more hazy than you think.

I can't bear to lie any more, I hope you can understand, I hope you will understand, what to do.

Angel's Egg quotes

  • Boy: I've seen a tree like this somewere... When was it? So long ago that I've forgotten... Under a sky where the clouds made sound as they moved. The black horizon swelled and from it grew a huge tree. It sucked the life from the ground... And it's pulsing branches reached up, as if to grasp something...

  • Boy: Maybe you, I and the fish only exist in the memory of a person who is long gone. Maybe no one really exists and it's only raining outside.
