The moment when time stands still on the battlefield

World War I, the Battle of Passchand.
This is not a war movie. There are also gunfights, the roar of artillery fire, hand-to-hand combat and broken arms and stumps, but it is an out-and-out love movie, to be precise, a love movie with war as the background.
The moment when time stands still on the battlefield.
David's cross-bound shape is too coincidental, but when the sergeant was kneeling in front of him after being injured, the camera zoomed out to give a long-range shot, and I realized that this was a symbol deliberately arranged by the director. But it is hard to say the connotation, perhaps it is a reflection on the deep contradictions implied in the film-war weariness and fighting for the country. From an individual perspective, war is cruel; from an overall perspective, it is obligatory to fight for the country, which is the main contradiction of the film.
Personally, I also highly praise the eye contact and nodding of the sergeant and the German non-commissioned officer. It was a silent communication between men and men, a communication between "pure people" who temporarily put aside their nationality and hostility, which made a ceasefire on the battlefield for a while. After a while, the sky suddenly became clear, and there were falcons under the blue sky.
The film is beautiful, especially the section on the hillside, the river in the distance, the grass going in and out, the oil painting quality, and the golden silhouettes of men and women in the sun. The heroine is very beautiful, the kind of moving beauty, the type of person who can shoot different effects with a camera and a DV. It can also be called temperament or style.
Regarding the bridge section of ML, everyone usually translates the word into English and then simplifies it, calling it "ML". Maybe it is too "white" to say it directly, or it is easy to cause reverie. But such ML footage is so natural and pure that almost anyone can look directly at it and call it an "erotic clip". I remembered that funny movie called "Erotic Movie", the whole movie was full of chirps, but at the climax there was an innocent "ML" full of love. The one here is even more beautiful, sarah's step back, half turn, turn back, an extra little movement, and then the expression is supreme... The
sergeant is destined to die in battle, this is the cruelty of war. After lingering in the contradictions for a whole film, the director introduced the general situation of the war in the subtitles after the film, and also gave the answer in the director's heart, first war weariness, then fighting for the country, and finally fighting for a meaningful war war.
The ending song is excellent, Sarah's work.

  • German Machine Gunner: [Extends hand towards Dunne] Kamerad...

[Dunne stabs him in the forehead]

  • Dobson-Hughes: [insulting the Germans] Gas... even a Boer wouldn't sink so low to use gas.

Michael Dunne: I believe we're using gas, sir.

Dobson-Hughes: [after a pause] Quite right.
