Released in February 2020, True Heroes is Bollywood's first mainstream gay-themed film to be released on a large scale in India. The significance and contribution of the film to social progress is undoubtedly significant.
Article 377 of the Indian Penal Code stipulates that anyone who has sex with men, women or animals against the laws of nature will be sentenced to life imprisonment, or up to 10 years in prison, and a fine. On September 6, 2018, the Supreme Court of India ruled that the long-standing Article 377 of the Penal Code was overturned, and homosexuality was no longer considered a crime in India.
The story happened on the eve of the ruling of the Indian High Court.
Gay Harman brings Kadick back to his cousin's wedding. The romantic and uninhibited Kadik hopes that Harman will officially come out to his family, but he is accidentally bumped into by Harman's father when the two kiss on the wedding train. Since then, Harman's father has regarded Kadik as a thorn in his side and tried his best to correct his son and break up the lovers.
Kadick, who is persevering in love, encourages Harman, who is stuck in every possible way, to pursue his true love bravely and firmly. At about the same time, India's Supreme Court was engaged in a century-long debate on whether homosexuality was a crime. . .
Different versions of coming out are being staged in every corner of the world every day. Although cultures vary from place to place, it is not difficult to find that the challenges of coming out of the closet are essentially the same, and even the manifestations are the same: the father's scolding and beating, the mother's crying, forced marriage, forced treatment, Even some superstitions.
Inheriting Bollywood's usual comedy and song-and-dance style, the movie "Rise of True Heroes" tells the story of this hardship in a witty way. Really Indian and really joyful.
On the road of being gay, Kadick in the film insists on a straight line, that is, coming out of the closet, and then being together in public. And because of the huge pressure from the family, Haman had to make compromises and wanted to choose a curve, that is, a marriage.
Although Kadick was right in persuading Harman: "This is not a game, and it is not a movie. You're going to be miserable from your wedding night, can you be sure to pretend for the rest of your life? Can you play a loyal husband? … We don't have many chances to be a hero once, now you decide who you want to be? In this story, a hero or a passerby?"
But everyone faces different pressures and situations. Even between lovers, we had better not impose any will of our own on each other. We can tell each other what we think, then give each other time and space to think and let them make their own decisions.
Of course, for our love, we must keep running!
