The last time I watched a movie in college life was dedicated to this "Guardianship". In fact, I have some origins with this film. I noticed this film when I attended the French Film Festival last year, but unfortunately I had to give up because of the conflict of time. This year's French Film Festival was destined to be unable to participate because of graduation. When I learned that the "Art Association" had finalized the film, I immediately bought a ticket, which was considered to make up for the regrets of last year and this year.

When I saw the finalized poster of this film, I thought of "A Quiet Place", which also gave me the expectation of a thriller. After watching the movie, I realized that sensitive and stubborn men are the biggest monsters in life. However, the sound processing of the two films replaced the soundtrack with blank space, creating a suffocating atmosphere of tension, and the emotions continued to accumulate in the silence, and the climax at the end exploded like thunder, full of fire and danger.

Director Xavier Legrand was engaged in theatrical performances in his early years, and this film is his feature debut as director and screenwriter. Years of stage experience have given him unique insights into the soundtrack: he believes that the traditional stage soundtrack is too dramatic and hinders the direct communication between the audience and the actors. During the planning stage of the film, Legrand learned that some wives can judge whether they will be beaten by the loudness of their husband's sound when they open the door. Taking this as inspiration, he designed the sound theme of the film and boldly replaced the soundtrack with ambient sound effects. The sound effect of this film is extremely delicate, and the small changes in breathing and the sound of the body rubbing against the back of the chair are clearly identifiable, which not only helps to create an immersive viewing experience, but also intuitively expresses the emotional changes of the characters in the film. . It is no exaggeration to say that emotions are the main line that drives the development of the film, and sound is the means of externalizing the inner emotions of the characters. From the forbearance and calmness in the dialogue at the beginning of the hearing; to the chaotic sounds of water flowing and cell phone ringtones in the middle, symbolizing the inner annoyance of the characters; and then to the end, all the voices became unrestrained, crying, The noise and gunshots rose from wave to wave, not only hitting the eardrums of the audience, but also shattering the already precarious family.

The film's attention to detail is also superb. Under the premise of limited information, the director did not choose to tell the story, but hid many details that lead to the plot twist in the narrative. This is especially reflected in how the male protagonist finds the address of the female protagonist step by step. At the family gathering, the hero's mother mentioned to attend the wedding of the hero's sister. This seems to be irrelevant to the main line, but when the audience is about to forget it, something happened: the hero's mother met at the wedding. A neighbor from many years ago, and this neighbor happened to meet the siblings on the bus a few days ago. With this clue, the father found the bus stop sign and deduced the address of the heroine. The film once explained the scene of the two brothers and sisters riding in the car. If you observe carefully enough, you can find a woman watching the sister and brother. There is no doubt that she is the neighbor the hero's mother met at the wedding. The director's conception is fine.

In an interview, the director said that in France, "domestic violence" is often understood as a husband's violence against his wife, and his original intention for making this film was to explore the negative impact of domestic violence on the entire family. In the film, the negative influence of parents on their children is like an invisible chain binding the entire family. The director intentionally set the characters in a symmetrical relationship: the father's parents-father-son correspond to the female's parents-mother-daughter, which undoubtedly gives the audience a more intuitive impression of this "hereditary misfortune". The film repeatedly refers to the grandfather's domestic violence against his father, such as Julian's testimony at the opening hearing, and the confrontation between the father and son at the dinner table. There is no doubt that the father inherited his grandfather's fiery temper and intensified it on his son; the cowardly qualities of the maternal grandparents were also clearly reflected in the mother's behavior, who had always adopted a strategy of evasion towards her husband, leaving the young Julian. As a shield, this undoubtedly further stimulated her husband's anger. Unlike their parents, the younger generation began to consciously resist this "hereditary misfortune", which is also the only bright color in the film's oppressive atmosphere. The youngest son Julian insisted on getting rid of his father, and only then did the hearing for the opening of the story. Under the pressure of his father step by step, he used his weak strength to maintain a stable life with his mother, delete his mother's phone number, and tell his father the wrong home address... Although this effort is futile, it is pitiful; When her daughter found out that she was pregnant, she resolutely broke away from the whole family. The director handled the clue of the daughter very implicitly. After the ball, the daughter and her boyfriend left a large row of keys and a letter on the floor of the ball (pay attention to the details, there are three key sounds here, representing the key to the ball, the grandparents house key and own house key), it's not hard to imagine her whereabouts by contacting the lyrics she sang at the dance.

Interestingly, the daughter's first appearance was to see off at the station, which undoubtedly hinted at the direction of her destiny. And the whole movie can also be seen as a loop: the beginning is the end. After a thrilling night, what awaits the mother and son will be another endless battle for custody. Will the result this time be as they wish? The answer is not always the same. If even the daughter's injury report can't convince the judge, what can the police report and the broken door panel say? The title of the film originally meant "to give everything away". The family is the place where all love is poured out, but when this love can't find a way out and a response, it turns into double resentment, and this hatred is very much under the family's package. Confusing, in the film this is highlighted in the setting of the neighbors.

The neighbor appears three times in the film. The first two times she saw a hilarious child and a kind father. When she discovered the truth about the scarred family, she cast a long gaze and doubts, which also represented All the audience's thoughts on the concept of "family". The door closes to stop watching, and the film ends, but our thinking should not stop there.
