Writing fiction has taught me one thing, and that is to question our lives and the world. More than just storytelling, fiction, like any other art form, questions life. In filmmaking, I still maintain this attitude. I ask the audience questions through the film, hoping that the audience can find the answers for themselves. Actually, I don't think movies can convey so much information. I think in art or creative activity there are more questions asked than answered, and people need to find the answers themselves. Giving a definitive answer or convincing that it is the answer is not how I create it. For some films, mostly entertainment, there will be a clear message like "justice wins" or something. However, will the audience take this message home with them after the movie ends? Of course, a movie that asks questions without giving answers can make audiences uncomfortable, but I don't think we can stop asking questions.
In the film Oasis, I wanted to tell a story about a broken communication. I think there is a very serious communication problem in today's Korean society and in the world, and I tried to put this communication problem into a love story. The two main characters in "Oasis" have communication barriers, they are outcasts from the social fringe who no one cares about, such characters surprise us, can such people also have love like normal people.
The first thing that comes to my mind about the character of the male lead in Oasis is a very cold winter, with a short-haired man wearing a summer shirt with a pattern of palm trees, which is usually worn on summer vacations Kind of, he's waiting at a bus stop on the outskirts of the city, begging for a cigarette from the man next to him. I don't know why, but such a scene popped into my head. Probably because I had seen such a man before. In short, this is my most original starting point for this character. The reason why I set the heroine as the image of cerebral palsy is because the disability of cerebral palsy not only limits people's ability to move, but also affects people's ability to communicate. Once girls with cerebral palsy enter puberty, their self-awareness often becomes very strong Sensitive, they will stay at home and are reluctant to go out to avoid the eyes of others. The heroine in Oasis is such a girl. I am very familiar with people's attitude towards girls with cerebral palsy, because my sister is such a cerebral palsy person. If there is such a disabled person in a family. Well, every member of the family will be more or less burdened with this trouble. This disability casts a shadow over the life of the entire family, and this shadow will accompany them for life and no one can escape. The unfortunate girl in "Oasis" can only seek solace through her own fantasies. For example, she imagined the flecks of light reflected by a shaking mirror as flying butterflies and birds. After creating these two characters, I think in the end their love will never end well, but the structure of a romantic love adventure can be used, where a knight rescues a princess who is enchanted and imprisoned in a tower, and that's all The prototype of a love story. But I want to show this structure more explicitly. because. I named the female lead Princess, and the male nickname was General.
