"Jojo's Fantastic World": What would the world in Captain K's mind look like?

"If you can go to the cinema, try not to watch it online." Although the films that compete for this year's Oscars can be seen early, when I learned that some films will be introduced in theaters, I have been looking forward to them, including "1917" and " Speed Car King, Jojo Rabbit, etc.

Even if it is half a year later than originally expected, as long as it can be seen on the big screen, all the waiting is worth it.

I know that it may be a little late to talk about a movie from last year. Many people have analyzed and commented on the metaphors and details in the film... However, it is not too late to comment on good works.

"Jojo's Whimsical World" is a film where you can guess what story you want to tell just by looking at the introduction, and it is true, so the focus of the film is not how ups and downs, but how to convey it lively The thoughts, will and feelings contained in it.

I have to say that the film’s use of children’s perspective to narrate is a very easy and safe way, and at the same time it shows the duality of "beauty and absurdity" in the two worlds of fantasy and reality . More interested: In the language environment of this film, his "Wandering World" may not be inferior to Joe Qiao, on the contrary, there will be a touch of tenderness and blood.

[This is a "spoiler alert" that has little meaning but is still to be said. 】

"Jojo's Whimsical World" is so beautiful that it doesn't look like a movie with a World War II theme.

Because it originated from the subjective perspective of 10-year-old Jojo Bezler, the world in the eyes of the teenager is always sunny and colorful , but it "happens" to mix in something related to the Nazis.

In the eyes of others, the dying Third Reich is gray, but Jojo's eyes are filled with the warm colors of spring, the yellow Youth League uniform, the red swastika logo, the green woods, the grass and the mother's cardigan... To him who has never changed, war means courage and glory, and the future of his great country is bright.

The fantasy version of Hitler played by director Taiga Viditi adds a lot to the film. It is funny, shrewd, and cunning, sometimes pretentious, sometimes timid like a mouse hysterical, and perfectly blends the three identities of friends, idols and fathers. Let "Jojo's Fantastic World" add a naive and absurd comedy temperament.

Due to the subjective and objective tone, the audience should not be too realistic when watching the film. Apart from the rabbits that appear in different scenes, the most representative things are the dancing butterflies.

For the little Nazi Jojo who is loyal to the leader, dancing and butterflies are not necessary, they are even a depressive voice that disturbs their will.

Helpless, after all, he has not been finalized as a young man, especially after the Jewish girl Elsa appeared, Jojo could not restrain the butterfly in his belly and began to move around— whether it was a one-sided fanatical belief in Hitler or unconsciously toward Elsa Intimacy is the result of Qiao Qiao being attracted by the "beauty" in his mind. The difference is that the former stems from propaganda and self-admiration, while the latter stems from active inquiry under the unknown and curiosity.

When the butterfly in Jojo's heart finally surpassed his uniform, he saw the dancing shoes of his mother Rosie while chasing the butterfly in the square.

This is the most wonderful turning point in the film. The abstract thing of the butterfly and the act of tying shoelaces symbolize Jojo’s immature young mind. The latter has witnessed Jojo’s stumbling growth all the way, never Take care of yourself (letting my mother help), to falteringly learn a lesson (to be teased by my mother), and finally to suddenly tie shoelaces (to tie my mother)...

If the butterfly flying is a step-by-step process of drawing out the buds, then learning to tie the shoelaces is a kind of overnight ripening.

Of course, "Jojo's Whimsical World" has not been separated from the eyes of the ten-year-old boy from beginning to end, whether it is the exaggerated and dramatic battlefield or the dance of Jojo and Elsa on the street, they have all implemented the film. The most remarkable temperament and tone.

In addition to color, the film highly retains a consistent artistic conception in terms of composition and lens, namely: Jojo’s infinitely fascinating and half-truth fantasy world, no matter what kind of adversity, or what terrible things, ultimately Will be glorified / alienated by Joe Qiao into an acceptable explanation.

I can't help wondering, what would Captain Krenchendorf's world look like in the same sky?

Every character in "Jojo's Fantastic World" is very brilliant. My favorite character is Captain K. Although similarly set supporting roles are not uncommon, he has the protagonist Jojo in this film. energy of.

Captain K, who just appeared on the stage, exudes a temperament that is incompatible with the surroundings : the collar is open and the gun belt is diagonally straddled. In the German army, it can be called a raunchy alien, and he bluntly said "Our army will lose." How can you look like a good instructor who leads the youth of the Third Reich to flourish?

Even when he showed off his marksmanship, his various poses with huge amplitude and carelessness were full of exaggerated jokes.

Captain K was sent to the back to sit on the bench due to the defeat on the battlefield. He may have been unwilling and shameful, but (early in the film) he was more depressed and numb .

Before the building is about to fall, teaching a group of kids how to be cannon fodder and doing some logistical work that is better than nothing is disgraceful and meaningless to a soldier.

Ever since, Captain K was more like a harlequin who hadn't been awake all day. He was messed up by the people around him, and made Rosie slap a big mouth, and occasionally make fun of the innocent Joe Joe, just like a mud. The veteran ruffian who can't support the wall.

But with the passage of time, another special aspect of Captain K gradually emerged. He actually understood and accepted Jojo’s "artistic processing" of Jews, and after deliberately or unconsciously weed out childish racial prejudice, he simply treated young people. The affirmation of imagination and thirst for discovery -he can also paint.

In everyone’s original impression, Captain K is a person who is not enterprising. If he sounds good, he will be disappointed. If he is bad, he will eat and wait to die. The world in his heart must be a lifeless lead-grey... With the pen and the shirt he designed, Captain K's world also has the same color as Jojo.

Qiaoqiao’s world is colorful because of his youth and innocence, while Captain K’s world has not lost its color, but because he can have fun in hardship, has the courage to face the cruel truth, and does not forget the kindness that he can ... so After that, Captain K tried his best to save Jojo and Elsa.

In the final decisive battle, Captain K pushed his romantic spirit to the extreme : wearing a red cloak that pulled the wind, wearing a flamboyant red tassel, carrying his ambiguous adjutant Finkel, holding a gun. To the enemy that is impossible to defeat.

Yes, even though I have realized the stupidity of war and the meaninglessness of resistance, Captain K still did not surrender or be a deserter. He retained the last dignity of a soldier. This is also the reason why I completely like this role: I recognize myself. And the destiny of countless Germans, neither admit defeat nor evade, face destruction with magnanimity, and use silly whims to meet the reality that is undone.

I can’t tell if Sam Rockwell’s performance is more outstanding, or Captain K’s persona is too classic, maybe it has both...Originally, after Captain K dashed up, this role should be finished. But as if to give him a proper name, then he arranged a scene in which he rescued Jojo.

At this point, a bold, careful, romantic and unruly image is completely completed (unfortunately, there is also a little bit of lingering charm).

In the cruel years of war, if Jojo’s "wonder world" is the A side of growing up, then Captain K’s "wonderful world" is the B side after maturity. They shine in different ways, but Just as beautiful and moving .

Of course, I like Captain K so much, probably because similar roles are too rare in recent years. In this era of fewer and fewer World War II movies and fewer non-Jews/non-US military perspectives in World War II, anyone with flesh and blood The image is worth cherishing.

PS: Fortunately, I went to watch "Jojo's Fantasy World" in the movie theater. The rhythm of the film is a little bit lax in some places. If you watch it by yourself at home, you may be distracted to do other things halfway... If you haven't watched this movie, or want to watch it again, you might as well go to the theater to support it.

Jojo Rabbit quotes

  • Yorki: There are bigger things to worry about than Jews, Jojo. There's Russians somewhere out there. They're worse than anyone. I heard they eat babies and have sex with dogs. I mean like that's bad, right?

    Jojo: Sex with dogs?

Yorki: Yeah. The Englishmen do it too. We have to stop them before they eat us and screw all our dogs.

  • Captain Klenzendorf: Well, if it isn't Herr Handgrenade himself.
