Florence was sexually assaulted by her father.

The fear that Florence showed when she had sex with Edward for the first time was not simply a fear of ignorance of sex.

But because,

She was probably sexually assaulted by her father during her childhood , and more than once.

The clues given by the director are not obvious, but it cannot be said to be very hidden. Logically, it is relatively smooth:

This piano piece is called "Non allegro", which translates to "unhappy" in Italian.

Florence listened to Non allegro, and began to recall / the camera cut to the scene, when he was at sea with his father and his father taught her to tie a knot .

Then the lens cut to something similar to a volume regulator, the left side of the tuner shows about 1800hz, and the right side shows about 450 (?).

After the memory was over, Florence began to cry.

-01:08:12

Florence saw Edward's reaction and voice in SJ, and his emotions became flustered.

Then Florence started to be a little confusing (doubt, confusion)

Then, the lens cut to the volume adjuster.

Then, a little girl lay on the bed, and a man came to him.

From the girl's reaction, she knew who came , and her eyes revealed that she knew that what happened next would not be good.

Florence thought of this and became more and more frightened.

And the lens and cut to the Florence scene with his father at sea .

Then the girl hugged herself tightly, and the man got closer and closer.

Recalling this, Florence's fear has reached its peak.

Then it cut to the girl, who closed her eyes tightly at the end of the shot .

For children, the reaction of "closed eyes" is usually a subconscious reaction when they know that something bad is about to happen, and they are very scared but have nothing to do .

Memories stop here.

Then Florence sat up carefully and slowly , looking suspicious.

After seeing JY left by Edward,

Emotional breakdown.

She started to wipe JY crazily, as if crazily trying to wipe off the things that had happened before.

Finally, why did Florence tell Edward not to look at her?

My personal opinion:

Edward's voice and reaction after SJ reminded Florence of similar scenes before. The experience of being sexually assaulted was too profound, which caused her to alternately overlap the past and present scenes .

(You dreamed that you were caught for cheating. When you wake up for a few minutes, you will not dare to face the lover by your side normally, will feel ashamed, etc.)

The above is not personal experience:)

And Edward was standing by, as if Edward saw her being sexually assaulted by her father, feeling very ashamed.

Edward finally furious, because his first second S became angry and became angry when he finally quarreled with the "money" mentioned above (he also knew that his social status was low), "allowed to sleep with others", which led to his emotions. It was out of control and decided to divorce.

-END

When Florence's daughter went to Edward's record store to buy a record, I cried for a long time.

There is nothing that can’t be said, cherish the person in front of you while it’s still okay,

I wish the lovers finally get married.

  • Florence Ponting: [Reading love, sex and marriage to Ruth] Women are like doorways. Men can enter though them.

  • Florence Ponting: Edward, I want to make you happy. But I think I'm always a disappointment. You're always advancing, I'm always backing away, and we can't talk about it. We can never just be happy... or just be. You're always demanding something more and I'm useless at... And you go silent and unhappy and it's all my fault. And when I do... I mean when I say yes to something, even if I don't really want to, I know there'll be another thing that I'm expected to do. I'm no good at these demands.
