Eternity and day

The whole movie is very much like a stream of consciousness novel. The things in the imagination and the past are perfectly combined with what is happening in reality.

There are many images in the movie, corresponding to the different emotions of the author

What moved me most was the last scene of the movie. At the end of his life, the protagonist returned to the old house where he lived in the past, opened the door, and he was wearing a black spotted dress standing by the sea, golden beach, blue ocean, clear sky, and his wife on the trestle bridge. Up and dancing, surrounded by familiar friends, playing musical instruments, dancing lightly, this is the day he and his wife got married. The wife turned around, walked towards him, and invited him to dance with him.

The protagonist, who is immersed in joy, tells his wife his love: he will continue to buy fresh words for his wife, and ask her: what is tomorrow? The wife replied cheerfully: One more day than eternity

It seems that at the end of this life, the protagonist thinks back about the life he has gone through and finds that what he cherishes most is his wife. At the beginning of the movie, the protagonist said in a monologue: Anna is my only regret, but is it really the only regret?

The words he didn't know well, the unfinished poems, and the works that brought him honor. But these things did not make him happy on this last day.

The only regret?

There is a fragment in the movie, from the gloomy and deserted tones, to the sunny sea yacht, his young wife is dancing happily and enthusiastically with friends, the protagonist moves from the bow to the stern, and his mother sits sadly Then, tell him that I often have nightmares recently, dreaming of my husband who has passed away, and miss him very much. But the protagonist at this time did not understand his mother's grief. I just happily told my mother that I had published an article in a well-known French magazine. This scene formed a very clear contrast: the spirited protagonist and the tear-stained sad mother.

The role setting of the little boy in the movie is also very interesting. At the beginning of the movie, there is a monologue: What is the time? Grandpa said that time is the little boy throwing sandbags on the beach. Personally, this little boy in yellow clothes also has the meaning of "time". When the protagonist was about to part with the little boy, he reluctantly said to the little boy who was going to leave: Your ship has two hours to leave. Can you stay with me?

The little boy agreed, and they boarded the night bus together. On the bus, there were people getting in and some getting off. At this time, the boy and the protagonist became a "bystander". On this "bus stage", a pair of young couples arguing and a red flag came up respectively. A young man, a poet, I think these all symbolize things at different stages in the protagonist’s life. Combined with An Zhe's personal life experience, the arguing couple may represent that the protagonist and his wife could not understand each other when they were young, and the young man with the red flag may represent his dissatisfaction and resistance to the military dictatorship, as well as helplessness and exhaustion. The poet represents his obsession with language. The two-hour bus ride seems to be a metaphor for his life. After getting off the bus at the last stop, it was finally time to part with the boy. This limited life also reached the end.

The protagonist and his wife finally find eternity in music and dance.

Eternity and a Day quotes

  • Alexandre: All passed by so quickly. This suspect pain... my stubbornness to want to learn,to want to know... then the darkness... the silence around me... the silence. All made me believe that before the end of winter with the ethereal silhouettes of the boats, and their sudden breakthroughs in the sky, with the lovers along the promenade,in the declining sun, and the hypocritical promise of the spring, all made me believe that before the end of winter... My only regret, Anna... but is it only one?... is not to have finished anything. I left it all as a draft, shattered words here and there.

  • Alexandre: I once asked you "how long will tomorrow last?" and you answered me: Eternity and a day.
