"Nothing" tells the story of a low-level family. The heroine Penny in the movie is an angry and anxious mother. The protagonist Phil is a taciturn father, his daughter Rachel is also taciturn, and his son Ronnie inherited his mother's anxious temper. Year-round quarrels at the dinner table are the daily routine of this family, and mothers and sons are always at odds with each other. In the face of the fierce quarrel between the two, his father did not stand in line, and always retreated to the side to escape the endless disputes. Whenever she sees Phil shrinking, Penny will inevitably feel lost. The tense life day after day keeps everyone in a state of nervous tension and mental depression.
Everyone tried to find an exit, but it was hard to tell when facing family members. Penny felt distressed, and she would often sit on the balcony alone in the middle of the night to catch her breath. The heavy and unsatisfactory life keeps Penny from seeing the future, and tomorrow will only repeat the life of yesterday, lifeless. And Rachel, who works as a cleaner in a nursing home, sees sickly aging lonely old people every day. The family atmosphere is so tense, there is no warmth at all, and family members are like strangers. Rachel is not involved in family disputes, just bears all this in her mind. Ronnie, the unemployed son at home, has nothing to do every day, and the remaining energy is used to fight his mother. He had no way out, he just wanted to be alone quietly. Phil is a taxi driver, earns a meager salary every day, and has no right to say when he gets home. He simply kept silent, no matter how his wife nagged, he seemed indifferent on the surface. In fact, he has been internally injured for many years, but his injured side has never been shown in front of his family.
Neighbors also have their own worries, some arguing with her boyfriend after pregnancy, or madness after being drunk. They are also struggling in each other's living environment, and no one is more relaxed and open.
It wasn't until the day Ronnie fell ill that all the hidden illnesses of the family were exposed. When Penny couldn't call Phil, she was terrified, and she needed him by her side. At this time, when the depressed and fat middle-aged man raised his eyes and looked towards the sea in confusion, his eyes clearly read despair. Perhaps it was because of his children, he finally turned his head back and connected the phone. When he came to the hospital, he realized that the child was extremely important to him.
It was also this opportunity that he finally opened up to communicate with his wife. For many years, he could not feel his wife's love for him, and even felt that he was repeatedly despised. He lived under the pressure of his wife all the year round, and he was miserable. And Penny was shocked by Phil's words, she really couldn't feel the light, but she didn't expect that all of this was actually caused by herself, and the source of everyone's discomfort turned out to be herself. Penny suddenly woke up and regained the beautiful relationship with Phil. Ronnie on the hospital bed was also infected, showing a long-lost smile.
