★★★★ (out of four stars) "Son of Others" is complete, self-sufficient, and unquestionable. Critics have nothing but praise for it. It requires no insight or explanation. It sees and explains everything. This is the most confident and perfect account of sadness and joy I have ever seen. I agree with Stanley Kaufman in The New Republic: A second viewing only highlights the greatness of the film. But I don't want to miss the first viewing, so I'll write carefully. Directors Jean-Pierre and Luc Darnet did not mislead or deceive us in the slightest. They didn't give any explanation either. They simply (and not that simple) show, and we lean forward, keep quiet, watch the expressions, watch the plot, and focus on how the characters feel. Let me describe a very early sequence in detail so you can understand how the Darney brothers work. Belgian carpenter Olivier (Olivier Gourmet) ornaments) manages a shop in which the boys work. He pointed out a boy's mistake when using a chainsaw. We wonder if anyone is going to lose a finger or a hand because we've been beaten by formulaic movies. No, the planks will be sawn correctly. A woman entered the store and asked Olivier if he could take another apprentice. No, he has too many apprentices. He suggested going to the welding shop and asking. No sooner had the woman and the young applicant left than Olivier slipped out of the shop, and, astonishingly, hurried after them like a beast, spitting them through doors, windows and the corners of corridors. After a while, strong and agile, he jumped onto a metal cabinet and peeked out of a high window. Then he told the woman he was taking the boy. She said the boy was in the bathroom. The hand-held camera follows Olivier, usually at medium to close range, as he looks towards a corner. Is he watching the boy take a shower? Is Olivier gay? No, we've seen too many movies. He just looked at the boy in his clothes sleeping on the bathroom floor. After watching it for a long time, he woke the boy up and told him he had a job. Now you have to stop reading this review altogether and go see this movie. If you're open to simplicity, depth, maturity, silence in a film that speaks in the echo chamber of the soul, go out and see it tonight. Son of Others is a great movie. If you find yourself unresponsive to it, you have room to grow. I'm not arrogant; I grew up on this film. It taught me something about movies that I didn't know. What have I learned? The film is only possible with the way it was shot, not with the traditional narrative style. Like a strictly documentary, the Darney brothers follow Olivier, learning everything about him by watching him. They do not lead, emphasize or signal through music. The movie doesn't have reaction shots because the whole movie is their reaction shots. The brothers made Olivier's sense of the character the director of the film. ...now you've seen the movie. If its horror and love captivates and moves you, if you feel that this visual style is just for this kind of story, let's agree: very few movies can tell us so little while telling us everything at the same time. Olivier raised children in the custody of the Belgian government - teaching them a craft after they were released from juvenile detention. Francis (Morgan Marlin) Decoration) has been living in a juvenile detention center from the age of 11 to 16. Olivier asked him what crime he had committed. He said he stole a car radio. "Five years?" "Someone died." "How?" Francis didn't see a child in the car. The child cried and refused to let go of Francis, who was frightened and "grabbed him by the throat." Olivier corrected: "Strangled him." Francis said, "I didn't mean to." Do you regret what you did?" "Of course." "Why?" "Because five years in prison, it's something to regret." You've seen the movie, and you know that Olivier knew about the death something. You've seen the movie and know that Olivier and Francis were in a remote lumber yard on Sunday. You've seen the movie and you know how loud the movie is, with heavy wooden boards hitting each other. It hurts to even hear them. The film doesn't use those sounds or woods to create suspense or anything. It just respects the properties of wood, as Olivier did, as he taught Francis. You guess, because you've been trained by formulaic movies, serendipitous events, or acts of violence. What you can't guess is the breathtaking psychic beauty at the end of the movie, and yet it's no more extraordinary than anything that has passed. Olivier Gourmet won the Best Actor Award at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival. He plays an ordinary person who acts in an ordinary way at all times. Here's the key: he's ordinary. His behavior is "model", not his performance. We use this word to mean "laudable". Its main meaning is "fit for imitation". Everything Olivier does is exemplary. Walk like this. Hold. Precise measurement. When you need a mallet, don't use a steel hammer. Put the nail in the middle. Flatten first with a file, then with sandpaper. Keep the plank balanced and lean against the ladder. Buy your own apple pie. Hold on to the woman who needs to be calm. Compliment a woman who finds out she is pregnant. Find out the truth before telling the truth. Don't use words to discuss unexplainable things. Happy to say "I don't know". Happy to have a son and teach him a craft. Happy to be a father. There was a recent movie that made me laugh because it said there was a rule in The Godfather that covered all situations. There have never been so many rules. "The Son of Others" is about a man who doesn't need rules because he respects his profession and knows his tools. His vocation is life. His tools are his loss and his hope. .
