A woman (prostitute) with a low social status was tricked by his lover, a small owner of a bakery, for most of her life. When she was middle-aged, she was finally completely righted because she once gave birth to a son for her. But for this woman, it is already a great happiness. The director uses this to tell his audience - "Italy is a patriarchal country".
Vittorio De Sica is indeed a great genius, he turned such a story, which should have been sad, into a "nerve comedy" full of dramatic conflict and fidgeting all the time. (And, of course, the male and female lead actors - Marcello Mastroianni of "Always Handsome" and Sophia Loren of "Girl with a Thousand Faces" also contributed to this).
