Do movies really need plot?

"Children of Jianghu", such a grand title, did not expect it to be another small plot movie. In fact, I can't tell whether this is a small plot or no plot. After seeing the praise from the sky, I have begun to wonder if the movie really doesn't need a plot. Am I the only one who thinks "Children of Jianghu" is not good?

After watching the entire film, I have only three impressions, but if I think about it, there may be five. One is all over the world, I was surprised to see this drinking method at that time, this very typical artistic expression won my heart; the second is that the heroine Qiaoqiao was jailed for shooting, there is no suspense; the third is Qiaoqiao Hotel Cheat money, full of creativity; fourth, Qiaoqiao was reported as rape; fifth, Xu Zheng. The only thing that drives the plot is Qiao Qiao's shooting, and that's it.

In fact, the film's reflection of the social life at that time is very sufficient, which is worthy of praise, but it is a little too sufficient. Whether the social life is well reflected or not depends on the typicality. Director Jia made a good choice, but it is more about refinement and integration. Director Jia may have overlooked this point, resulting in a large amount of scenes that have nothing to do with the plot. Typicality is also greatly discounted. The ideal reflection film is "Farewell My Concubine", which reflects in the plot, not for reflection's sake.

I can probably feel what Jia Dao wants to express, the children of the rivers and lakes are precarious in the rivers and lakes, and they can't help themselves in the torrent of history. However, the expression of the theme of the film has never been such a prose-style, running-account-style laying out, but must be driven by the plot and concentrated in the performance of the story, otherwise it will be difficult for the audience to feel what the audience wants to express. Han Han made the same mistake in "The Future Will Be Indefinite".

In addition to the above, there are some uncomfortable places. First, there are some unprofessional performances, even a little nervous, at the beginning of the film. The dispute over the payment of money is the most obvious; second, there are a lot of still shots, such as Xu Zheng's long statement, the camera is always aimed at Xu Zheng, and you can watch it. Visual fatigue; third, there are a lot of still pictures, as if it is a blank space between characters' dialogues, as if it is a character's thinking, but such a situation will never appear in reality, and it is a waste of time to put it in the film; fourth, There are a lot of unbeautiful shots and mise-en-scene. For example, a person whose head and legs were cut off by the camera walks past the front of the camera. Is it for the sake of realism? Isn't there a slightly more aesthetic way?

I have not seen other works of Director Jia, but the appearance of "Children of Jianghu" may have stifled the desire to see other works. May Director Jia's works get better and better.
