In the past, when I wrote film reviews, I always liked to digress a lot. When writing "Mints", the first thing I had to ask myself was: What is the theme of this film? No way, the reading inertia of primary school Chinese: an article without a central idea is not a good article! Even if it is just a short essay about simple scenes, its central idea must be one: expressing the author's love for the great rivers and mountains of the motherland.
So, what about the Mints theme? From a formal point of view, it should be regarded as a suspense film. Following the six major scenes of the film, a question has been hanging in my mind: why is the actor Jin Yonghao such a person? What prompted him to perform like this? Is this always the case, or is it an accidental blow? But if we abandon the question of form, I think the theme the film wants to express can also be: the capricious and contradictory life path.

I think if a native Korean is watching "Mints", they may have more emotions. Because this film is like "Memories of Murder", it has participated in the political history of South Korea for nearly 20 to 30 years, which makes the film add a bit of heaviness on the basis of human nature. This kind of movie-watching feeling is like Hou Hsiao-hsien's "City of Sadness". If you don't understand Taiwan's "228 Incident", then you don't understand Hou Hsiao-hsien's courage and the detached position of this film in Taiwanese movies. Another example that can be compared is "The Summer Palace". If you are not born in China after the 1970s, how can you understand the feeling of separation between those passionate years and the end of the world!
Speaking of the film itself, the Korean historical factors are removed, the suspense veil is removed, and in the face of the frank and naked life path, Kim Yong-ho's life (this character should not commit suicide by lying on the rails in the end, but jumped off. The first character shot of the film should be a Flashback shots, the audience who pay attention to the details of the tie can see this), on the screen is just a pawn in the hands of the director, can only move forward, not back or regret, even if it can go back in time, it can only be like both sides of the railway The scenery of advancing is just an illusion of retreating. Does the director want to portray Kim Yong-ho as a victim of a big era? Or does the director want to express the capricious and contradictory life? "The Arrow of Time" shatters all assumptions and fantasies. Under this idea, I would rather interpret the tears shed by the last male protagonist of the film as the director's pity for himself.
