In the second year after I came to Beijing, I enjoyed another work of To Qifeng, "The Dark Flower", which was strongly recommended by my roommate. The strange music and the still dark plot made me fall into the atmosphere created by To Qifeng again. In the movie, a feeling of reunion after a long absence makes me very excited, yes, this is exactly my favorite movie, this is exactly the To Qifeng I know, such a moving man who interprets a group of men, with a distinct character. Feature display and meticulous portrayal are his forte. It can be said that every character he creates has touched the audience, or at least deeply touched me. If Liu Weiqiang's works are compared to Jin Yong, then To Qifeng's works must be It's Gu Long. When you haven't seen the sword come out of the shell, people have already fallen into a pool of blood. The feeling of killing people without blood is the reason why people are addicted to it.
From the well-known "Dark War" to "PTU" and "The Big Event", perhaps only Johnnie To can shoot such a cheerful group of men, and only Johnnie To deserves the title of the great director. This was added in 1972. TVB Hong Kong started out as a messenger man. With his obsession with drama, he gradually reached the peak of his career. Maybe he has really come to an end, maybe he is really poor, in any case, at least his "Dragon City Years" this time has completely disappointed me, except for a large group of first- and second-tier actors in Hong Kong. Apart from dangling, I really can't understand what kind of thoughts To Qifeng wants to express to the audience. The chaotic plot and the perfect ending made me completely desperate. What is he doing? Where have all the exciting things of the past gone? What the hell is he thinking? Maybe I'm over-hearted, and people don't want to express anything at all! People just want to interpret a bland story in a law-abiding way...
It is undeniable that "Dragon City Years" is very cool, very authentic Hong Kong Jianghu terminology, most of the time the picture is dark and crowded... The definition of a crowded group drama is: every character must have a distinct personality. "Dragon City Years" can do it, and do it very well. But the mentally retarded storyline and eye-popping happy ending really made it unbearable.
If To Qifeng still has no intentions as usual or takes special care of those viewers who can't understand or keep up, I can only blame me for being outdated! I really don't understand To Qifeng and his movies anymore. I really don't understand. Is it because I am too demanding, or is he depraved?
