The following is an excerpt from the conversation of Fu Cong:
Jacqueline Dupree and Daniel Barenboim
T: You lived in the UK for many years, so did you have any relationship with Duprey before her death?
Fu: Of course there is! I've known Dupree since she was only 16 years old! I'm good friends with Dupree and Daniel Barenboim, and Dupree only met Barenboim through my introduction at my house!
T: I really like listening to Dupree's recordings of cello performances. Whether it's the studio version or the LIVE version, they're all very well performed. The skills are really impeccable! The passion she had when she played the violin, especially the contagiousness of her live concerts, was unparalleled. I have a documentary DVD "REMEMBERING JACQUELINE DU PRE" published by TOSHIBA EMI in Japan, which contains some precious video materials of her concerts in various periods of her life. People insult!
Fu: Yes, I also like Dupree's performance very much, she is the best! Dupree's playing personality is so strong that no one can easily recognize her piano sound. The piano she used was very good. do you know? The qin that Yo-Yo Ma is playing now is left by Du Plei, but Du Plei's playing the qin and Yo-Yo Ma's qin playing are completely different things! How can Yo-Yo Ma be compared to Du Plei back then!
T: Have you also seen the so-called biographical film "HILARY AND JACKIE" Regarding the authenticity of the content in this film, there have been many disputes between music historians and people in the music industry. As a good friend of the Dupree couple, how do you evaluate this film?
Fu: I saw this film in the UK, it's so fake, it makes me angry! At least the Dupree I know doesn't look like that at all! In the UK, there is also a film about Dupree, which is much better and basically conforms to the facts.
T: You must also know that Barenboim, who is a Jew, was conducting a scene in Jerusalem for Wagner's "Tristan and Isolde", which caused an uproar, right? What do you think of Barenboim's move? Do you agree with him?
Fu: Of course I know about it, Barenboim did it right! This is what an artist should do! I've never been comfortable with a lot of what Barenboim did before, but this time I absolutely admire him!
T: Art is art. Artists should have their own pure artistic principles. That's how you see it, right?
Fu: yes
