During the Christmas vacation, the third season of Westworld was finished . The overall look and feel of this season is the rhythm of American dramas, and I have to admit that the third season is far from the high level of the previous two seasons.
First of all, I personally feel that the most prominent shortcoming of this season is the rhythm of the plot . The series between each episode seems to be the sequence of the remaining time, not to mention the bold and subtle multi-line multi-directional narrative pearl jade of the previous work, this season's plain one-way narrative and slightly blunt foreshadowing can really only Reach the basic line of ordinary TV series. Many foreshadowings are almost explicit, such as the defense robot purchased by Delos at the beginning. But at the same time, the information given by many pictures that should play a hinting role is not clear enough. For example, Serac's recollection does not mention the existence of Solomon. As an audience, at least I did not understand the twin relationship between Solomon and Rehoboam and the Serac brothers. And when Delores and Caleb find Solomon, they're at a loss. In the same way, Caleb's background display also makes people feel rushed. Before E06, the plot repeatedly emphasized that Francis died on the battlefield, which constantly strengthened the impression. Only a scene of the tide kept flashing back, which made people wonder for a while. However, the screenwriter tried to overturn all the character settings about Caleb in just one episode in E07. Personally, the reversal effect is very blunt. Maybe it would have been better if the flashbacks from the previous episodes had been more meaningful. In short, it is not clear how much Nolan himself participated in the script of this season. It is a pity that the script of this season is far from excellent.
Another disappointing point is the fragmentation of the characters' faces and behaviors . The performance of Delores' body in the whole play is... very face-to-face, that is, the female protagonist of beauty and full skills. As for her behavioral motivation in the early stage, it was only presented by the characters' repeated self-talking lines, especially when consolidating the Hale camp. The behavior also seems unreasonable, that is, talking about comforting, and handling it a bit rough. In the same way, about Meave's core motivation - family affection, it also makes people feel perfunctory in presentation, and the picture about Meave's daughter is very limited. I don't know if the screenwriter thinks that Meave's motives have been explained clearly in the previous season, and this season will not be repeated. But at least from the audience's point of view, the omission of this part of the plot makes the overall viewing experience a bit inconsistent. After all, not all audiences watch two seasons in a row. On the other hand, the Bernard and Ashley (Stubbs) storylines always felt like they were optional but had to be told for the fourth season. It was too fragmented, and apart from finding the CEO of Incite and having a relationship with the mainline Cross, other times are outside the main line...
Another obvious shortcoming this season is the martial arts . The setting of the character's force value is too arbitrary. In the first few episodes, Delores' health value plummeted after a shot in the abdomen. Later, Delores and Meave were both shot several times and continued to fight each other... The fighting scenes and car chase scenes were not very good. Good effect, but it feels like the series is trying hard to fill the content with martial arts. Personally, I would rather see a literary drama with exquisite lines and full of metaphors than a lot of martial arts dramas that are not wonderful. The first two seasons give people the feeling that they are interlocking suspense dramas dressed in sci-fi dramas. The suspense setting and the puzzle solving process are arranged just right, and at the same time, the group portraits are fully portrayed, which makes people have to admire the screenwriter's skill. However, this season has directly degenerated into an action movie with plug-ins. Basically, all characters have set their tone since their appearance. Even the reversal of identities (Hale and Meave) is also expected, and the reason behind it is not even very obvious. It's tenable (at least it's not convincing enough); the other characters are even more of Sima Zhao's heart. The whole play just shows how the characters act for their own purposes.
Said a lot of shortcomings this season, but I love the point of Westworld , needless to say. Its cautionary ness is still there, still deep, just looking forward to the next season to be even better.
