During World War II, in Poland under German occupation, the plumber Podeck (Robert Wieckiewicz) and his partner Zapek both acted as thieves. The intricate sewers became their best hiding place and Storage room. He did business with the city's blocked Jewish quarter, and was an old acquaintance with Ukrainian officers in the German army, and enjoyed a little freedom of life in troubled times. Soon the Germans began to slaughter and hunt Jews. Some Jews who did not want to be taken to the concentration camp reached a deal with Podek. They were given the opportunity to hide in the sewers at a per capita price. The dark and smelly sewer became Podek’s shelter for Jews. In the refuge, the Jews on the ground were quickly arrested. Under the soaring prices and the continued high pressure of the Germans, Zapek left him, and Podek only relied on himself to maintain the safety of the Jews in the sewer...
