Everyone in the film is following their own Law of Desire. When desire becomes the driving force to control your behavior, the result can be imagined. It is only a tragedy.
In my opinion, this is the most autobiographical film among Almodóvar films, from which we can see the traces of his career in his early years. At the same time, there are no specific elements in his film: telephone, homosexuality, police, murder , Drugs, dysfunctional families, transgender people (ambiguity in gender identity), media, hospitals, Catholic churches and Madrid. At the same time gather most of his Muse: In addition to Carmen Maura and Antonio Banderas, there are Bibí Andersen, Rossy de Palma and Eusebio Poncela. A seemingly simple story is multi-dimensional and complicated under Almodóvar's schedule. Desire, sex, and murder are intertwined in such a melodrama with mixed joys and sorrows.
Unlike the various kinky relationships in Almodóvar's other films, the sexual relationship between Pablo and Antonio is indeed the most natural and sweet description in my opinion, neither overly narcissistic nor overly romantic. Antonio Banderas gave one of his best performances. After leaving Almodóvar, he has never performed well, so I look forward to their new film The Skin That I Inhabit again.
