In 1973, the commander of the Chilean Army, Augusto Pinochet, with the secret support of the U.S. government, led the navy, air, and air forces and police forces in a coup d'etat, and jointly overthrew the socialist government under the leadership of President Allende. 3000 leftists were killed in the coup, and millions of Allende supporters were reduced to political prisoners or forced into exile. President Allende also died in the battle. His death marked the demise of the communist regime in Chile and subsequently opened the dark prelude to the 17-year military dictatorship.
