The British movie "The Selfish Giant", of course, does not refer to these two children, Arbor and Swift, but the boss of a scrap shop nicknamed "Kitten" that they relied on after they were out of school.
The 13-year-old Arbor regarded the greedy “kitten” as an example and gradually alienated the kind-hearted Swift. It was not until the thief-stricken Arbor witnessed Sie’s death by an electric shock that he woke up like a dream.
This film, directed by American female director Clio Barnard, is full of modern fables. The dumb horse and the harsh reality form a kind of silent scream. Reminiscent of another British movie "The Kid and the Eagle" shot in 1970. The difference is that Arbor also has a good friend Swift. The child in the "Eagle" film only has a small eagle that he feeds, but the ending is the same helpless and sad.
It stands to reason that such a story can happen anywhere, but the movie gives us a messy heart, and feels the fog of reality, as well as the misunderstanding, hatred and malice between humans. The distorted state and deterrent relationship between existence, no matter when and where, will cause mutual harm.
Although the director is from the United States, it seems that as long as he comes to the British Isles, the style of the movie will change. But the cool colors of British films are unique and self-contained, and there is always a kind of moisturizing and silent magic. Such as "Break Through the Shell" in 2012, it seems that only in the British Isles can this kind of thought-provoking and irresistible salt water taste be photographed.
