The director of the film, Jules Dassin, had no choice but to escape to Europe due to the persecution of McCarthyism, and made several classic films there, such as this film and another business card, RIFIFI. I feel that dassin is more European than other American directors, and there is tightness in the loose. The chase scene and appropriate music at the beginning of the film firmly attracted my attention. Along the way, the story is extremely compact and there is nothing superfluous. The performance of the actors is remarkable, making each character full of personality. The whole film was shot in London on real scene, and the sense of realism emerged spontaneously, and most of them were night scenes, which happened to be the title of Night and the City. The final tragic ending reflects that the unrealistic ambitions of the little people are useless and sometimes dangerous. The final ending of the actor also reflects the darkness and cruelty of society, and the intriguing relationship between people is embarrassing. I personally feel that this film is more fascinating than RIFIFI. Strongly recommend friends who are interested to give it a try.
