"Siberia"

It is about Lucas, an American diamond merchant who came to Siberia for business. Met the bar waiter Katja and fell in love. At the same time, Lucas’s partner failed to deliver the goods on time, causing dissatisfaction with the local gang. The Russian Federal Security Service also stepped in, making Lucas not a human inside and out, and was shot and killed by a gang.

The story of the whole film is hardly like a story, simple and rough, the screenwriter came up with this plot by taking the brain. Lucas is played by Keanu Reeves. Keanu changed his career to become a businessman because of the danger of swift and special attacks. Maybe it was the choreographer who planned to use the actor to care for the play, but he didn’t expect the play to ruin the actor. Keanu ended up stunned. In terms of evaluation, the film is not the worst, it is the second worst.

You can't delay these 104 minutes in vain, right? Even if it is a film that is not worth watching, try to find some of its highlights.

The photography is very good, winter in Siberia, winding hills, dense birch forests, cabins in the forest, hunting in the snow. All moving and yearning. The men and women of the fighting nation are bold and wild. There is emotion and kindness in the rough language. It's the gangsters who are trying hard to learn to be gentle, but their smiling tone is frightening. The fighting in the cabin was very real. The gangsters have to complete the tasks assigned by the boss. Lucas, an ordinary businessman, alone, knows that he is sad about this catastrophe, and simply fights to the death. The final outcome was actually determined when the first gunshot was fired.

There are two conversations between Lucas and Katya in their relationship. Two different issues were discussed separately. It can be regarded as the two passages that I am interested in watching this movie. First paragraph:

Katya: "Is your wife a good person?"

Lucas: "She's fine."

Katya: "And now you are with me."

Lucas: "Yes, I am here with you."

Katya: "Don't you think this needs an explanation?"

Lucas: "My wife and I are old friends. Sometimes, with an old friend you learn to turn a blind eye to things you might rather not see."

Katya: "Is she just doing these things or are you doing the same?"

Lucas: "Open your eyes and close your eyes. You can never be sure what you might not be seen."

Here they are talking about cheating.

I don’t know if I have counted how many derailments have occurred in all families and in people’s lives in this era of big data. What is the ratio? I believe this percentage will not be very low. Someone once said arbitrarily: Most derailments are because men are not serious. This statement is actually very naive. Every man has a woman, and maybe a man has multiple mistresses, but conversely, there are also cases where a woman has multiple men. So on the whole, the total number of men and women should be the same. Infidelity is morally contemptible, and in my opinion, most people have been doing the same thing repeatedly throughout the ages. It is not the reason for the lustful desires, from the leadership to the common people, whether you are a wealthy lady or a trafficker, almost no one can avoid the vulgarity. There are too many reasons, either because of hormonal outbreaks, or because of the pursuit of stimulation, or alien seduce, or because of family rifts, or because of revenge. So what Katya came up with was: "Is she just doing these things or are you doing the same?" This involves what I want to say below.

There is a prerequisite for all such scandals. After the passion of first love between the husband and wife, they both calmed down. Can observe each other more rationally. You will always find that the other person is not emotionally suitable for you. There will be small cracks. If there is not enough communication, this rift will gradually expand, and over time, there will be different dreams in the same bed. Naturally, there are infinite fantasies and longings. At this time, each has derailed mentally. Out of rational considerations, most people in the society continue to maintain the attitude of respecting each other and raising their eyebrows in order to maintain the integrity and false face of the family, in order to gain the appreciation of Taoists and deceive each other. Here, Plato is not much more noble than Simon Qing. Coupled with countless temptations from the outside world, physical derailment is only the inevitable result of mental derailment. This was the result of Lucas’s very far-fetched answer: "You can never be sure of what you might not be seen."

There will never be a conclusion on this topic. What I can say is: please do it yourself.

The second dialogue:

Katya: "Do you know Gulag?"

Lucas: "Of course."

Katya: "There are two kinds of people there. There are some people, you put them in a small wooden house, give them a flint, and they will only use the flint to light the stove. They will spend this way year after year. The flint is beaten night after night, just to keep warm."

Lucas: "Where are the others?"

Katya: "Give them a flint and they will burn the wooden house."

Here, Katya does not necessarily refer to the Gulag, nor does it necessarily blame the prisoners for their obedience. It is about how each of us sees, how to change, and how to do at various key points in life.

The most rational approach is to stay in the cabin to keep warm before the time has come. Once there is an opportunity, you must burn the cabin without hesitation. The problem is that this "opportunity" in our lives is fleeting. And the environment we live in often leaves us in confusion, in various worries, and can't clearly see this "opportunity". What most people can do most of the time is conformity. They are still content with falling asleep in the iron room, content with the burning fire in the cabin. As described in Jiang Wen's "Let the Bullets Fly", the doors and windows were closed, and only a few geese dangling in the street. Only when people believed that Huang Shilang was dead, they all showed their heroic qualities and rushed forward.

At the end of the film, Lucas, an ordinary businessman, who is usually worried and reluctant, finally said: "Tell her, I will burn that wooden house willingly."

If we don't care about the rumors, if we carelessly abide by the stale rules, if we are less entangled in the pros and cons, if we are not afraid of death, we would have a better choice. Unfortunately, these are all "ifs." People have become accustomed to submitting, accustomed to obedience, and accustomed to drifting with the flow in life. But in many cases, the society needs someone to raise their arms. Even if death, loneliness and desolation await him in the end. Everyone's personal life experience also encounters a juncture where a choice must be made. After all, people need to take responsibility, but also courage. Hope this kind of courage does not just appear in the movie.

My rating: 5.0.

  • Boris Volkov: [speaking Russian] Who are you, huh? Who are you

Pavel: I think he speaks Russian.

Boris Volkov: In heaven, we'll all speak Russian, no?

    Lucas Hill: In hell, too.

    Boris Volkov: [laughs heartily]

  • Lucas Hill: My wife and I are old friends. And sometimes, with an old friend, you learn to squint away certain things, things you'd maybe rather not see.

Katya: Is it just her doing this, not-seeing, or you too?

Lucas Hill: The thing about squinting, you can never be certain what you might not be seeing.
