I wrote a film review a while ago called "Protecting Wife and Children in Prison". This article is called "Hiding and Peeking at the Life of Wife and Children". Perhaps it is a coincidence. This is also a recommendation for a movie called "Wakefield". The title is "The Fragile Zone", 2016.

The plot setting of this film can be said to be quite "sick", especially for Chinese people. But I also believe that many people will understand this kind of "illness" and even want to try it.

What is going on?

The hero is a middle-aged man of the middle class, like a lawyer or something. There are bighouses, good cars, wives and children hot on the bed, children are twins, two girls, teenagers. My wife is a beautiful woman. She used to dance ballet. She was originally the girlfriend of his good friend.

It seems that this family is simply a model of happiness. But we also know that there is no perfect family. As the saying goes: Every family has scriptures that are hard to recite.

Their family lives in the suburbs. One day, the hero didn’t drive a car after get off work but took the train home. Unfortunately, the train hadn’t arrived at the station. He had to walk home. His wife called him on the road. He was a little annoyed. I did not answer. Go and go, maybe a few hours later, finally it's here, exhausted, and it's dark.

When he was about to walk into the house, he didn’t know which of the tendons was wrong. He looked at the abandoned attic next to his yard, and he hesitated for a moment. He walked into the attic. Old things, old furniture, old clothes, old objects, etc., are covered with dust, and no one has come in for a long time. He walks around the second floor attic, where he can see his home through the window: his wife and children are waiting anxiously He went home to eat. His wife called him, but he hung up again.

He just hid in the attic and spied on his wife and children. If you just look at it for a while and then go home, it's nothing, it's at best a self-regulation in life. It's like going to a bar to get drunk after get off work.

Or when the protagonist in "The Eternal Sunshine of the Beautiful Mind" was about to squeeze into the light rail to work as usual, suddenly I didn't want to go, and then skipped work and took another light rail to the beach.

But this buddy made a somewhat perverted decision. I won't go home or go to work anymore, just stay in this attic. He took off his suit, watch, hid his wallet, and turned off his phone. Hit a floor and lie down. In the middle of the night, go downstairs and go to the trash can for some food, and then come back to sleep.

The wife called the police, and when the police came, she registered. The wife's mother came over and cried and comforted.

In short, this person just disappeared like the world, but in fact he was hiding in this neglected attic next to his yard.

The film is 1 hour and 40 minutes long. What is special about this film is that the whole film is narrated in the single first person of the male protagonist, with a large number of voiceovers of psychological activities. He was talking to himself while spying on his wife and children. There is almost no character dialogue. He has hardly spoken to anyone, and he can hardly hear other people's conversations. Everything is based on self-talking, memories, and imagination. A few times I really couldn't help laughing out loud.

From summer to winter, he stayed in this way for half a year. He was completely known as a skilled tramp. Later, the attic was too damn cold, it snowed, and there was no heating. Finally, he found out his wallet, cell phone, watch, went to a haircut and nails, drove his own car, and went to downtown New York where he hadn't stepped in for half a year, bought a high-end suit, and took care of it. Then drive home.

This day is Christmas, and the family is celebrating the festival. Before he walks into the door of the house, he fantasizes about the reactions, fears or surprises of his wife and children when they see him? Then he opened the door with the key--

My spoiler should come to an abrupt end here.

Finally, it is necessary to mention that the director and screenwriter of this film is a lady, Robin Swicord, who was nominated for Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button". She is also a wife, her husband is also a Hollywood screenwriter, and their daughter Zoe Kazan is a Hollywood actress.

Wakefield quotes

  • Howard Wakefield: People will say that I left my wife and I suppose, as a factual matter, I did, but where was the intentionality? I had no thought of deserting her.

  • Howard Wakefield: I never left my family. I left myself. Unshackled, I will become the Howard Wakefield I was meant to be.
