Objective or partial: A brief review of the movie "Gods and Generals"

As the adaptation of Mr. Sara’s novel trilogy "Killer Angels (Gettysburg)", "Gods and Generals", and "Ultimate Measure" (the last one was not cast), the film has been widely known among domestic fans. Related film reviews It is also endless, but after carefully studying all the film reviews, I found that there are some problems in them.

In the film reviews of Gods and Generals, there are "positive reviews" and "negative reviews", but all the reviews are nothing more than praise to General Lee (positive evaluation), insults to the Federal Army (negative evaluation), and southern The defense of the legitimacy of the regime (positive evaluation), the questioning of the legitimacy of Lincoln's attack on the South (negative evaluation), etc.

The director of this film, Maxwell, had previously filmed a generally more highly rated film "Gettysburg". Maxwell said:
"The Battle of Gettysburg took place in one location and took three and a half days. Citizens, blacks, and women are pure war stories. But when you want to reproduce the entire period of the Civil War, you can’t just focus on the people on the battlefield, but also pay attention to the impact on everyone’s lives, otherwise It will appear untrue.

I can only agree with half of this sentence. Indeed, when you want to reproduce the entire period of the Civil War, you have to pay attention to the people affected. This is a beautiful principle. But During the Battle of Gettysburg, rebels such as General Lee looted civilians all the way, artillery shelled Gettysburg, and captured free blacks along the way to the south as slaves. May I ask why the director Maxwell didn’t say a word. mention

Similarly, the time period in "gods and generals" in the description, the rebels also made many heinous atrocities. adhering to the principle of so good director Maxwell is still no mention of those atrocities, only It showed the audience how noble General Lee is, how despicable the Federal Army is, how reasonable the behavior of the South, and how unreasonable the behavior of the North. Good! No wonder the ordinary audience after watching the movie will write the above. The film review, director, you have planted your so-called objective facts into the minds of ordinary audiences.

Although "Gods and Generals" seems to switch the narrative perspective between the two warring parties, it seems more objective, but in fact, every rebellion narrative involves a lot of discussions of ideality, legitimacy, and David Copperfield Nonsense; every time I go to the Federation, there are only a few pitiful lines like a blunt line, as if the Federal Army is not a human but a machine, so it only gets a 5 points failing evaluation in IMDB, but it is in an abnormal atmosphere in the country. Get high scores. "Gettysburg" has a similar situation, but it's not so obvious.

In fact, the many works that switch the narrative perspective between the two warring parties try to give people the illusion of "this is objective", but they are far from "Glory". So objective and true.

Regarding the trilogy:

these three constitute a magnificent trilogy, the blueprint of what the director Maxwell called the film that can objectively reproduce all aspects of the Civil War. It was written from 1858 to 1865, most of which show the South People’s grievances and courage, the fearless spirit of sacrifice and patriotic determination in the north are basically not mentioned.

I think my words as the introduction of this series of books are at least objective. Of course, they are not the so-called objective

south of the great director. The poor attitude of defending the civil war reminds me of the poor attitude of some Japanese in defending the Second World War. The

South is better, and some people admit that they left the Union just to defend slavery, but most people fight against it. I didn't admit it to death, but found some high-sounding reasons, such as freedom for the homeland. How can I ask who will protect the freedom of slaves and the homeland? Standing in front of the historical facts, you know how ridiculous the words of fighting for freedom in the South

are. The same is true for Japan. Some Japanese people still say that World War II is called the Great East Asian Jihad. The nationalist sentiment on the Yasukuni Shrine is really embarrassing. . Although the reasons for this inconsiderate attitude are different, the poor and sour attitudes are all the same.

Today I must point out that there were citizens, blacks and women in the Battle of Gettysburg!
And these three played as victims of the rebels in this battle!
Gettysburg was originally a town, but it did not dig trenches and fight to the death like Atlanta or Vicksburg. It was an undefended innocent town. However, General Lee's rebels bombarded this town with artillery. During the battle, the rebels arbitrarily captured blacks around and sent them to the South as slaves.

The director did not mention these ironclad facts. Instead, he said that the citizens, blacks and women were
not at fault in the Battle of Gettysburg ! The Battle of Gettysburg is a naked story of justice over evil and light over darkness! Because the EFF has won, the North has defeated the South, and freedom has defeated slavery!

Despite all the shortcomings, as a fan of the history of the Civil War, I still recommend this book, because although it is rather biased, there is no way to fabricate some disgusting fictional plots.
