die

Algeria in the 1990s is a bloody memory. Ten years of civil war has added 100,000 irreparable souls to this already poor country. Islamic extremist forces and government forces are constantly retaliating against each other. One after another, new and old hatreds have turned war into an endless haze of terror. So when all this happened to the Christian pastors of "Man and God", even the most incontrovertible Puritans could hardly turn a deaf ear to all this. They come from France across the sea. After leaving their homeland, everyone is determined to be a good shepherd by answering the call of the Lord. Therefore, they have always abide by the clear rules, concentrate on cultivating the Taoism, work and live with the villagers, treat illnesses and save people, and listen to the villagers' sharing. Gradually, they became the spiritual pillar of the villagers. But the good times didn't last long. After the Islamists learned that he had medical capabilities, he repeatedly threatened to treat the wounded. The government military conducted helicopter surveillance every day after learning that the priests were treating the hostile elements. But the pastors have no plans to leave. Until the moment they were kidnapped and executed by Islamists, they were all praying fervently. Just like God, like eternity is already by their side, it is they from the bottom of their hearts that give the calmest smile to death.

Once, someone told me he was not afraid of death. Because he was even more afraid of living in this world alive and getting tired. But the problem is, "getting tired" is the true meaning of "death" itself. Because the horrible nature of death is not death, but deterioration. For the priests, the kind of daily life that witnesses curfews, coexists with death every day, and lives from the edge of sensitive conflict is a long process that is more terrifying than the "moment of death". Most people, in such a nightmare environment, will definitely leave. The pastors have also argued about whether to stay as shepherds or to save their lives and protect themselves. But soon, they realized the good intentions that came from God after they stayed. Because they discovered that those gradual qualitative things can be completely digested in the face of faith, so that each of them began to clean up as usual, heal the sick, harvest crops, and read the scriptures frequently. In the end, each of them was reborn. And this kind of life is different from the life that "saves life". Because the scripture says: Whoever wants to save his life will lose his life; whoever loses his life for me will save his life. (Luke 9:24)

This is a difficult question. Because all the deaths we understand are deaths that start from the "moment of death"; and all the lives we understand are all births that start from the birth of the mother. But in fact, true death begins with a life we understand; and true life begins with a life beyond our understanding and a complete rebirth from God. Therefore, as the movie said, when their deaths are finally forgotten, someone will definitely laugh at their naivety and accuse them of idealism. However, in the kingdom of God, what God values is the real life, not the surviving, but he does not know the so-called "birth". Don’t you see, we are all alive, but we all live in a generation without hope, step by step to death; the pastors are dead, but have received a complete resurrection from God, always in the arms of the Father Hope. Yes, we may ask why, why we have established this generation with one hand, but cannot be redeemed by generation alone; why we have "conquered" nature with one hand, but cannot overcome the fear of death in our heart. After reading "Man and God", the answer may be obvious. Because we have all deviated from God and the truth of true life. The pastors are able to face death calmly without him, because they are a group of true Christians, a group of true people of God.

And I believe that they are still alive now. Just as they always believed.

  • Christian: [Voice-over] Should it ever befall me, and it could happen today, to be a victim of the terrorism swallowing up all foreigners here, I would like my community, my church, my family, to remember that my life was given to God and to this country. That the Unique Master of all life was no stranger to this brutal departure. And that my death is the same as so many other violent ones, consigned to the apathy of oblivion. I've lived enough to know, I am complicit in the evil that, alas, prevails over the world and the evil that will smite me blindly. I could never desire such a death. I could never feel gladdened that these people I love be accused randomly of my murder. I know the contempt felt for people here, indiscriminately. And I know how Islam is distorted by certain Islamism. This country, and Islam, for me are something different. They're a body and a soul. My death, of course, will quickly vindicate those who call me naïve or idealistic, but they must know that I will be freed of a burning curiosity and, God willing, will immerse my gaze in the Father's and contemplate with him his children of Islam as he sees them. This thank you which encompasses my entire life includes you, of course, friends of yesterday and today, and you too, friend of the last minute, who knew not what you were doing. Yes, to you as well I address this thank you and this farewell which you envisaged. May we meet again, happy thieves in Paradise, if it pleases God the Father of us both. Amen. Insha'Allah.

  • Christian: We are martyrs out of love, out of fidelity. If death overtake us, despite ourselves, because up to the end, up to the end we'll try to avoid it. Our mission here is to be brothers to all. Remember that love is eternal hope. Love endures everything.
