"Strangers in Lahore Tea House": Being an outsider is not easy

The Pakistani guy who once made fame in the United States is now the leader of a "terrorist" in Pakistan. He was tracked down by the United States due to a hostage incident. The lobbyists sent by the Americans tried all kinds of tricks to figure out the exact location of the kidnapped hostages. In the teahouse, the young Pakistani guy in Dingding talked endlessly about the past for the lobbyists. It was an era full of dreams and opportunities. The Pakistani guy who graduated from Princeton University showed outstanding success in a financial company on Wall Street, and had a good career and love. It's a pity that just at the stall where happiness and glory are within reach, a rare "911" incident in the world changed the trajectory of the guy's happiness beyond recognition. This only stems from the fact that he has a "terrorist" face.

The film is adapted from the international best-selling book produced by Pakistani writer Mohin Hamid. It is a finalist for the Booker Prize of the 2007 British Literature Awards and was named the Best Book of the Year by the New York Times and Publishers Weekly. Nowadays, it has been put on the screen by the famous Indian female director Mira Nair, British actor Riz Ahmed plays the Pakistani boy, Levi Schreiber and Kate Hudson in "Wolverine", as well as Ji F. Sutherland plays with a group of small well-known supporting roles. The film has not received much praise in the mainstream world of the United States, and it has received more criticisms. Surprisingly, the film won the Audience Award at the Mill Valley Film Festival in the United States, which is famous for supporting independent production of films. Just like on the high-quality film review website Metacritic, the mainstream media scored 5.4 points, while the audience scored a great contrast value of 8.6 points, which once again proved that the audience’s eyes are discerning.

Strictly speaking, the film is not considered a thriller, but rather a feature film. The horror part is designed to adjust the atmosphere. What the author really wants to express is to clarify the unfair treatment of Pakistanis in the United States. Instead, it reminds Pakistanis that their own country needs to be built on their own and mixed in other countries. No matter how good it is, it is always an outsider. Once a crisis event occurs, all honor and happiness will eventually be beaten. If the Pakistani guy knew what happened to Qian Xuesen, a Chinese character with one person and three divisions, in the United States more than 60 years ago, he would be able to face his injustice and anger calmly.

The Reluctant Fundamentalist quotes

  • Changez: Pretend I'm him.

  • Changez: [about watching the events of 9/11 unfold] In that moment, I should have felt sorrow or anger, but all I felt was awe. What audacity. The ruthlessness of the act was surpassed only by its genius. And David had struck Goliath. I'm sorry if my reaction to the attacks has offended you, Bobby. I hope you see that I'm not celebrating at the death of 3,000 innocents, just as you would not celebrate the death of 100,000 in Baghdad or Kabul, for that matter. But before conscience kicks in, have you never felt a split-second of pleasure at arrogance brought low?

Bobby Lincoln: And you ask me why they're harrassing your family. Let's just cut the bullshit, okay? You believe in violence as a tool for social change. You teach a course in violent revolution at Lahore University. Your lectures are full of anti-American rhetoric.

Changez: [cut to him teaching] We will wipe the blood of the invaders from our swords!

Bobby Lincoln: If that weren't enough, you were spotted at an Asal Mujahideen meeting with Mustafa Fazil, a known cell leader.

Changez: [cut to said meeting] I think I can help.

Mustafa Fazil: I knew you would.

Bobby Lincoln: Last night, Anse Rainier was kidnapped. And this morning, your class was canceled. If you're just an innocent bystander, Changez, why were you hiding? Only guilty people hide.

Changez: Your candor is appreciated, Bobby, but your conclusions are wrong.
