Talk about the issues that everyone has to face through dramatic themes

"Birth of the Pope" is the movie I missed at this year's film festival. It is a novel with a novel theme. The particularity of the pope election makes the drama of this film. The new pope was voted by the cardinals, but the new pope felt that he was incompetent and was very frightened. Even the psychiatrist who was invited to give the Pope counselling was trapped together. Under such an interesting setting, Nanni Moretti (playing a psychologist), starring as a screenwriter and director, pulled the Vatican back from the stereotyped image of the Vatican back to our ordinary people.

Seeing that the new pope lacks self-confidence, it is easy for us to think of another movie "The King's Speech", which is an orthodox inspirational film in which the protagonist finally overcomes difficulties and becomes a good king through hard work. The power outage and the fall of the cardinal at the beginning of "The Birth of the Pope" heralded the haphazard comedy color of the film, and also heralded a different real theme from the former. The following is a little spoiler.

After being confined in a collective confinement, the bored cardinals who passed the time became more and more real. Some played puzzles, some stepped on motorcycles, some came from afar and wanted to sneak out for sightseeing, some played cards to do dissatisfied quarrels with their homes. Yes, some people danced to the music played by the false pope. The same boring psychologists simply organized an international senior volleyball game. The "Swiss Guards" were disqualified from the competition because of their age. The Pope’s Palace has become an activity center for the elderly. Seeing a group of cardinals playing volleyball in the yard of the Pope’s Palace, we have to admire the imagination of the Italians. Just imagine that the members of the Central Committee of the XX Bureau held a volleyball match in China. What a sight. At the same time, the Swiss guards posing as the Pope feasted, watched TV, and listened to music in the Pope’s room, so unhappy. All this seems to be a farce, but the atheist director has controlled his intensity. The combination of serious camera position and relaxed atmosphere makes comedic colors appear from time to time. It does not show much disrespect for the Holy See, but draws closer. The distance between the old bishops and ordinary people. At the same time, psychologists also interpret religion from a more human rather than divine perspective by arguing with the bishops and recitation of the Bible, but the point is to stop.

The bishops were physically trapped, while the pope who ran away from home was mentally trapped. He was completely reduced to an ordinary person, a performance candidate who failed the rankings that year, and an elderly person seeking psychological counseling. He wandered the streets of Rome, had many contacts with more ordinary people, and regained his dreams, and The child he would never have interacted with each other. When the audience thought that he had adjusted himself and was ready to take responsibility, he chose to face his own heart. It was his speech at the end of the film that freed the film from the suspicion of ridiculing Catholicism. It turned out that the film was only set on the theme of the pope election, to talk about the subject that each of us must face---examining ourselves. Thinking of us, we also have a lot of "given" responsibilities, shouldn't we also learn from the pope and think about it?

Nevertheless, I believe the Vatican will definitely boycott this movie. At the same time, I also hope that one day we can make a "Birth of the General Secretary". It does not need to be a satire, and it will bring them closer to the people, which is also a great achievement.
